Strava, the leading app for athletes, has announced the implementation of a new tool that allows users to display their CO2 savings on their daily commutes. From now on, users who mark their activities as “Commute” on the Strava app and on the web version will be able to see an estimate of the CO2 savings they achieve by walking, cycling (including e-bikes), or running instead of driving.

This new feature aims to promote the reduction of CO2 emissions and encourage more environmentally friendly modes of transport.
A recent study reveals that 72% of companies have made weekly office presence mandatory again after the remote work period. While this implies a return to commuting, the fuel crisis and the rising cost of living are pushing workers worldwide to adopt walking and cycling for their daily commutes. What could be a constraint is actually a strength for society. Thus, by allowing its community of over 100 million users worldwide to display the CO2 saved on activities marked as “Commute,” Strava hopes to encourage more people to opt for transportation methods with a lower environmental impact.

Brian Bell, Strava’s Vice President of Global Communications and Social Impact, said: “At Strava, we are proud to offer our community features and product updates that motivate them to be more active. By now providing more visibility into CO2 savings, we hope to encourage every Strava user to participate in the common goal of reducing global CO2 emissions.”
The new feature supports Strava’s ongoing efforts to improve investments in infrastructure that allows for better access to active transportation. Since 2020, Strava has been providing urban planners, municipalities, and researchers with anonymized and aggregated data on commuting trends free of charge via Metro, the web platform Strava makes available to eligible partner organizations. Community members who choose to record their daily commutes on Strava anonymously feed Metro’s dataset and, in turn, help urban planners and transportation experts in their community understand mobility patterns, identify investment opportunities, and evaluate the impact of infrastructure changes.
Globally, Strava data shows that the adoption of cycling for commuting has increased over the past year, with Paris leading the way with 97% growth thanks to investments in cycling infrastructure:
– Paris (+97%)
– Rio de Janeiro (+62%)
– Berlin (+57%)
– Tokyo (+46%)
– Munich (+41%)
Jérôme Sorrel, author and cycling commute specialist, said: “No matter your primary motivation for preferring to travel actively (walking, running, rollerblading, cycling, skateboarding) rather than by car or motorcycle. The motivation that should unite us all?
To somehow reduce our carbon footprint. It’s excellent news that Strava is finally offering me to track the CO2 I haven’t emitted by choosing cycling daily. Will KOM (King Of the Mountains) soon become KOP (King Of the Planet)? If so, I’m in!”
