New Shimano 105 Mechanical: The Accessible 12-Speed Groupset

One year after the release of the 105 Di2 groupset, Shimano is launching the 12-speed 105 with a cable-actuated drivetrain. The new Shimano 105 R7100 offers two chainring combinations and two cassette combinations, and it is available in five crankarm length options. A groupset at a relatively accessible price that should quickly represent the majority of Shimano’s sales.

According to the Japanese brand, 80% of complete road bikes equipped by Shimano for the 2024 model year will be fitted with Shimano 105. And of these 80%, 3 out of 10 bikes will be equipped with 105 Di2, 3 out of 10 with 105 11-speed (the old groupset), and 4 out of 10 with 105 12-speed mechanical. We therefore understand the strategic importance of this new groupset for the world’s leading manufacturer of bicycle components. Undoubtedly a future best-seller.

With the introduction of the SHIMANO 105 R7100 12-speed mechanical groupset, Shimano is targeting all amateur cyclists looking for reliable and easy-to-maintain components, all at an affordable price. Riders thus benefit from natural shifting, without worrying about battery level, while enjoying a versatile 12-speed drivetrain. The official price of the new 105 should be around €1150.

This new groupset thus benefits from the best technologies in cable-actuated shifting, with a compact Shadow RD rear derailleur profile, which offers efficiency and fluidity. The front derailleur features a toggle-plate design, so users can count on reliable chainring shifts, whether shifting to the large chainring or down to the small chainring.

Versatility

Thanks to the 12 speeds, the new 105 offers a very wide range of gears, with two cassette options in 11-34 and 11-36, and two chainring options in 50-34 and 52-36. With 50-34 and an 11-34 cassette, or even an 11-36, you will be able to tackle any climb while maintaining an efficient and controllable cadence. With the 52-36, you will have the necessary gears to ride fast on the flats or descents.

Improved Ergonomics

Designed to fit all hand sizes and shapes, the new mechanical 105 levers offer a more comfortable shifting experience thanks to new ergonomics providing more control and a better grip. Integrated cables reduce cockpit clutter.

Braking is optimized with the use of the current Shimano 105 BR-7170 calipers already seen on the 105 Di2. The calipers offer 10% more clearance with the rotors, for less friction and quieter rolling. This braking system is lightweight, durable, and easy to maintain, thanks in particular to a simplified bleeding process. Thanks to a lighter, smoother lever and a curved shape, the reach is also reduced. The new mechanical 105 R7100 groupset is only compatible with hydraulic braking.
