Trilogie de Maurienne 2023: A Weekend in the Summits

The 29th edition of the Maurienne Trilogy took place this weekend in the small resort village of Albiez-Montrond, at the foot of the Aiguilles d’Arves, the emblems of the event.

This year’s Trilogy was held over two days, with the timed climbs of La Toussuire and Albiez-Montrond on Saturday, and two cyclosportive events on Sunday, accessible as either a recreational ride or a timed challenge.

On Saturday, participants started with a neutralized departure from Albiez-Montrond behind the lead car. This was a way to avoid overconfidence on the descent before the timed section began just after the famous Opinel roundabout, for a 15km climb and 1,100m of elevation gain towards La Toussuire. After this rather substantial warm-up, all cyclists descended at their own pace to Villargondran for the second timed climb of the day, to Albiez-Montrond, passing through the Col de la Confrérie and its 52 hairpins sheltered by the forest.

This Sunday gave way to the Arvan and Arvan Villards routes, which were revised at the last minute due to roadworks on the descent of the Col de la Croix de Fer and the passage of Marmotte riders on the initially validated route.

The day’s program included some of the most beautiful passes in the Alps and a wonderful ride in the world’s largest cycling area, discovering its majestic landscapes.

With the Lacets de Montvernier, a trek through the valley to Epierre, the climb of the Col du Glandon and its terrible final kilometers, then a neutralized return to Albiez-Montrond via the Col du Mollard, participants certainly saw a lot of the country today.

Podium places were earned with sweat and panache, as the winner of the long course, Antoine TRAN VAN, finished in 3h12m33s, neck and neck with Yoann PAILLER, only 20 seconds behind him.

The Maurienne Trilogy, over both days, counted as the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds of the Cyclo’Tour Rotor. Congratulations to Cédric RICHARD, who retains his Rotor leader’s jersey, as well as to Eva POIROT in the women’s category, who reclaims the Matchy jersey, and to Nicolas FUSILLER in the Master 50 category, who proudly wears the Ergysport jersey.

After this sporting weekend, the Maurienne Trilogy, one of the oldest cyclosportives in France, continues to inspire and offer routes used by the greatest riders, proving its ability to adapt and reinvent itself.

Next year’s 30th edition will be no exception and will take the Maurienne Trilogy to a new dimension.
