When the Tour passes, cyclists follow. This is the conclusion that can be drawn from Strava’s observations of its users’ activities after the 2022 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. Strava, the reference application for athletes, with over 100 million users worldwide, observed twice as many rides on key Tour segments. In total, 3 million cycling activities were recorded during the events.
Some examples of key segments:
- Super Planche des Belles Filles (+260%)
- Col du Granon (+190%)
- L’Alpe d’Huez (+170%)

A challenge accessible to all
To encourage even wider and more sustained participation via Les Petites Boucles, Strava will reward every person who achieves the challenge goal by donating €1 to Secours populaire français – up to a limit of €40,000. This donation will contribute to funding over 500 bicycles used by the association and its federations during the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift to promote access to sports and mobility.
A nod to the Grande Boucle, the traditional nickname for the race, the challenge invites all Tour fans to cycle 29 km in July. This symbolic number represents the 21 stages of the Tour de France plus the 8 stages of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift.
Available on Strava, this unprecedented operation aims to make the world’s biggest race a celebration that is not only experienced from behind a television screen or on the roadside, but also on a bike, in the immense open-air stadium that is France.
130 routes for inspiration
A great cycling experience requires great roads and paths. To inspire participants, Strava goes further and also offers over 130 labeled Les Petites Boucles routes, to follow from the app or via a GPS device. Designed using the route creation tool and data shared by the entire Strava community, these approximately 29-kilometer routes use the most popular roads for cyclists in each region, as well as those of the Tour. They are intended to be accessible to as many people as possible. Available for free download and permanently, well beyond the 2023 Tour, these loops start from the stage towns of the 2023 edition and municipalities holding the Ville à Vélo label.
