Tourmagne Challenge: a 950 km Gravel Crossing

950 km and 10,000 m of elevation gain across the trails and roads connecting Melun to Nîmes – this is what awaits Gravel enthusiasts who embark on this route, inspired by the velocipede journey of two friends at the end of the 19th century.

Gravel and adventure enthusiasts now have a long-distance challenge to complete at any time of the year. A challenge inspired by the story and drawings of Marie-Antoine Barret and Léon Giran-Max’s “Bécane” journey 126 years ago, which Zéfal has restored in book form. A journey through a country, our country, that we would struggle to recognize.

This challenge, starting from Melun and arriving at the Tour Magne in Nîmes, will take you through the Venice of Gâtinais, the pointed city, the Bourbonnais region, the Chaîne des Puys, the Cézallier, the Monts du Cantal, the Truyère valley and its famous viaduct, the Margeride, and the Cévennes. A discovery of our country by the strength of your calves via a 950 km route with 10,000 m of positive elevation gain, or 32 “Laurent Jalabert” climbs. Thousands of kilometers have been covered to scout and select the paths taken.

A challenge requiring mandatory, free, and complimentary registration. There is no time limit; the cyclist must follow the challenge’s GPX track on their GPS and have their GPX file validated by the organization once completed. Following the successful completion of this journey, participants will receive the book published based on the account of the 1897 trip, distinctive Zéfal prizes, and will appear in the Tourmagne Challenge winners’ honor roll.

Matthieu Brunet, Zéfal General Manager and instigator of the Tourmagne Challenge:
“At Zéfal, we passionately oversaw the publication of this story of friendship, cycling, and adventure. We were looking for a way to let the cycling community enjoy this story, provided they earned it… but outside of any commercial value. What could be more appealing than this challenge, which offers you the book on the condition that you relive and share your adventure with us, following in the footsteps of Marius and Léon. I sought out fellow cyclists to put together this somewhat crazy project of a great gravel route to be ridden as a challenge, and ultimately, not surprisingly, I only met people enthusiastic about carrying out this project. We worked, we rode, we flatted and damaged our drivetrains, we were surprised to have endured more than we anticipated. It is with great joy that we will see the first registrations of challengers attempting this feat and trying to win their copy of the book as well as their place on the Tourmagne Challenge honor roll.”
