These advanced new bike computers feature dynamic performance metrics, advanced mapping functions, solar charging and new features to help cyclists ride and train better.
Garmin announced today the launch of the Edge 540 and Edge 840, the latest bike GPS computers offering a wide range of performance-based training metrics (targeted coaching tailored to each personal goal), connected features and improved navigation assistance. Both models are available with a “solar charging” option offering 32 hours of battery life in intensive use or 60 hours in battery saver mode.
The Edge 540 and 840 computers feature advanced performance metrics such as the targeted adaptive training program, analysis of the cycling level and the course demands to improve performance and identify strengths and areas for improvement.
“ We are delighted to introduce these new Edge 540 and Edge 840 bike GPS computers to the global cycling community. With new performance-tracking metrics, mapping improvements and a solar charging option, these new computers are a real asset for cyclists looking to improve their performance.” – Dan Bartel, Vice President of Global Sales at Garmin.
New key features
Designed by cyclists, for cyclists, the Edge 540 and 840 computers have many innovative features such as:
- Cycling level and course demands analysis: identification of the rider’s strengths and weaknesses and preparation for the demands of a specific course through training in targeted areas.
- Adaptive training program: whether outdoors or indoors, these Edge computers offer daily training suggestions for personalized coaching adapted to the rider’s current training load, recovery and upcoming events.
- Real-time energy level (Stamina): lets you track energy and fatigue levels in real time, so you can better manage your efforts during a workout and estimate how long and how well you can hold a specific pace.
- Power Guide: lets you manage the intensity of your effort by setting power targets throughout a race.
- ClimbPro climb planner : displays the elevation and gradient of the remaining slopes during a climb, without needing a route to be saved beforehand. This feature is accessible directly on the Edge device or via the Garmin Connect™ app.
- Multi-band GNSS: Delivers improved positioning accuracy, allowing the Edge 540/840 to work even in difficult environments, such as a dense forest or a cliff face.
- Solar charging: the Power Glass™ solar lens on the solar models extends battery life up to 60 hours in battery saver mode, a gain of 25 minutes of battery life per hour during the day.

Rugged and durable
The Edge 540 and 840 models are designed to adapt to all types of terrain, whether for gravel, grueling climbs or anything else; they are equipped with a 2.6-inch color display as well as buttons suited to all environments. The Edge 840’s display is touchscreen.
Non-solar models offer up to 26 hours of battery life in intensive use and up to 42 hours in battery saver mode, while solar models can offer even longer battery life.
The Edge 540 and 840 series give cyclists practical features during their rides. They can assess their fitness in different environments by taking heat and altitude acclimatization into account, and set up notifications to refuel or rehydrate along the way. Cyclists can also get detailed information on their performance through advanced metrics, as well as mountain bike data such as the number of jumps, the distance covered in jumps, Grit (difficulty) and Flow (smoothness), to track each of their rides in detail.
The advanced navigation features of the Edge 540 and 840 series let cyclists stay on track, whatever their route. Thanks to the built-in mapping, data specific to the different types of routes is displayed using the Trendline™ Popularity Routing feature, to identify the most popular roads and trails as well as points of interest. Cyclists can also discover new routes all over the world thanks to Trailforks. And to explore in complete freedom, they can pause turn-by-turn guidance and off-course notifications at any time and then quickly reactivate them to return to the original route or the starting point
The Edge 540 and 840 computers are equipped with advanced navigation tools and training metrics to help cyclists give their best. Using the data collected by Firstbeat Analytics™, such as VO2 max, training status and load, recovery time, etc., cyclists can see how their body responds to training. With a compatible Garmin smartwatch, they can get an even more complete view of their health and well-being thanks to tools such as the Pulse Ox pulse oximeter, Body Battery™ energy monitoring, advanced sleep tracking, sleep score and much more.
Always connected
Cyclists can ride with peace of mind thanks to built-in safety and tracking features such as LiveTrack, group messaging and incident detection for all cycling activities, including mountain biking.
The Edge 540 and 840 series are compatible with the range of bike radars and tail lights from Varia, as well as with inReach devices featuring SOS and communication service capabilities even out of network coverage.
For indoor training, the Edge 540 and 840 series pair easily with Tacx trainers to ride all year round. Whether indoors or outdoors, cyclists can use the Garmin Connect app to create and send routes to an Edge device, view all the technical details of a ride, record their personal achievements, evaluate their workouts and much more. For those who want to customize their GPS computer, the smartphone app Connect IQ™ offers custom apps and widgets to download.
