L’UNION sport & cycle, the leading professional organization for companies in the sports, leisure, cycling, and active mobility sectors, today unveiled the results of its Cycle Observatory.
Since 1999, this study has provided an annual overview of bicycle sales in France, based on figures from various distribution channels in the sector, with the assistance of the consulting firm 6T.
Despite a challenging economic climate, the overall cycling market (bicycles + parts and accessories) continued its growth in 2022 with a cumulative turnover of 3.6 billion euros, an increase of 5.2% compared to the previous year. This growth, which amounts to 52% over the last four years, is all the more remarkable given the global health crisis that occurred in the two preceding years.
The cycling market driven by e-bike sales but weakened by declining sales of conventional bicycles
With a +7% increase in its total turnover, the cycling market, which now stands at 2.378 billion euros, experienced significant growth again this year. The primary reason for this progression is the sales of electric-assist bicycles, which once again reached record figures with 738,000 units sold (+12% vs 2021). Conversely, sales of conventional bicycles fell by -13% compared to 2021 and continued a downward trend that began in 2016. This decline should be put into perspective, as it is mainly due to a decrease in sales of children’s bicycles and entry-level bicycles, two product categories particularly affected by inflation.
The bicycle, the favorite mode of transport for the French
The bicycle nevertheless confirms its status as the most sold mode of transport in France, representing 43% of individual means of transport sold, placing it well ahead of scooters (26.5%) and cars (26%). Although their effect remains difficult to measure, government-introduced purchase aids for electric-assist bicycles have contributed to the industry’s positive results. These incentive measures are crucial for democratizing bicycle use in France, particularly among the most modest households, and must therefore be sustained.
Increase in French production and replenishment of stocks
French bicycle production is on the rise, with 854,417 units produced in France, 52% of which are electric-assist bicycles, representing a +7% increase compared to the previous year. According to projections, French bicycle production is expected to exceed 900,000 units in 2023. Italy (21%), Romania (15%), and Portugal (15%) account for 51% of bicycle imports into France.
The return to normal of the supply chain has led to an increase in stocks at all levels of the distribution chain.
Jérôme VALENTIN, Vice-President of UNION Sport & Cycle, states: “Growing uninterrupted for 12 years, the e-bike confirms its status as the most sold mode of transport in France. However, with a market share of 28% and considering the dynamic observed in the Netherlands and Germany – where it represents 57% and 48% of new bicycle sales respectively – its development potential is considerable. This dynamic, combined with our ambition to produce more than 2 million bicycles in France within five years, will make our country the economic leader in the European bicycle market. With this in mind, we will sign a Sector Contract with public authorities in June 2023 to achieve our objectives.”
