Canyon to Produce 100% Recycled Titanium Bike Components with IperionX

Canyon and IperionX Partner to Explore Sustainability Improvements in the Cycling Industry Supply Chain.

Canyon Bicycles has announced a collaboration agreement with IperionX Limited to develop a more sustainable titanium supply chain through the production of bicycle components using IperionX’s 100% recycled, low-carbon titanium.

Canyon has a strong reputation for innovation, implementing cutting-edge technologies, design, and the highest standards of quality and service. The opportunity to develop bicycle components using IperionX’s 100% recycled titanium aligns with its ambitions to promote the use of innovative materials in the production process, and to match these materials with its environmental goals.

IperionX is working closely with Canyon’s product development teams to produce bicycle components using IperionX’s low-carbon, recycled titanium metal powders through additive manufacturing methods. The parties have agreed on an initial project to prototype Canyon bicycle parts, including frames, using IperionX’s 100% recycled titanium produced through additive manufacturing methods.

Titanium, as a frame material, holds a privileged and desirable position for consumers, as it is both very strong and lightweight (about half the weight of steel) and extremely corrosion-resistant, eliminating the need for paint. However, until now, its use in bicycle components has been limited by its high cost compared to materials such as carbon frames, as well as the high carbon footprint of the current titanium supply chain, which relies on the energy-intensive Kroll process.

The partnership between IperionX and Canyon represents a new step in the rapidly growing, highly visible, and sustainability-focused global bicycle market, and complements IperionX’s recent partnerships in the luxury goods sector.
