An independent reporter and amateur cyclist, Stéphane Dugast cycled across France, from Dunkirk to Hendaye, along the “diagonale du vide” (empty diagonal). From this off-the-beaten-path journey, he drew a story that is both intimate and universal, highlighting “reenchanted France,” as he likes to call it.
The book
In July 2020, after the first lockdown, Stéphane Dugast set himself the challenge of cycling 2,200 km across France, accompanied by Raymond, his bike. More accustomed to the rigor of the polar circles than to cycling solo, he discovered unknown rural territories and met many enthusiastic and inspiring people along the way. Forty days of an optimistic and ecological odyssey, to recharge his batteries and boost his mood.
The author
Journalist, author, and director, Stéphane Dugast has spent twenty years conducting investigations, filming, and traveling across all latitudes, with a strong attraction for wild and immersive environments. In 2015, he co-wrote with Daphné Victor the critically acclaimed biography, Paul-Émile Victor. J’ai toujours vécu demain (Robert Laffont). After Polar Circus (2019), L’Échappée is his second book published by Éditions du Trésor.
