Maurten Bicarb System: A Revolution in High-Intensity Nutrition

Since 2016, Maurten has enabled endurance athletes to rethink the parameters of carbohydrate fueling, inspiring them to achieve personal bests, win Olympic medals, and set world records. Today, the Gothenburg-based brand has unveiled the latest innovation based on its patented hydrogel technology – launching a sodium bicarbonate fueling system that marks a paradigm shift in high-intensity, power-based training and competition.

The Maurten Bicarb System was developed in collaboration with some of the world’s greatest athletes. It has been used in iconic performances recently: Primož Roglič’s Olympic MTB gold, Vuelta exploits, Lotta Kopecky’s epic victory at Strade Bianche, and Nils van der Poel’s Olympic gold and 10km world record.

“We have spent years researching and testing the Bicarb System, and the results we are seeing are truly incredible. So much so that it creates a moral dilemma for some athletes,” says Olof Sköld, CEO of Maurten. “When you hear athletes give feedback like ‘This is scary!’ or ‘I don’t know if it’s fair that I can have it and my competitors can’t,’ it makes you think long and hard about the power of this innovation.”

Sodium bicarbonate is known for its performance benefits and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as one of the very few non-banned supplements that directly improves athletic performance. High doses of sodium bicarbonate counteract the negative effects of acidity that overwhelm muscles, leading to exhaustion during intense anaerobic efforts. But the stomach problems caused by ingesting significant amounts of sodium bicarbonate negated any performance gains. Until now.

“The Bicarb System uses the same principle as our gels and drinks for carbohydrates – Hydrogel technology to encapsulate the bicarbonate and make it tolerable in high doses for athletes,” says Olof Sköld. “We, and the athletes who have used it so far, couldn’t be happier with the results. It’s an absolute paradigm shift.”
