Loes Adegeest (NL) and Bjørn Andreassen (DK) 2023 UCI Cycling Esports World Champions on Zwift

This Saturday, February 18, 173 riders took part in the 3rd edition of the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships on Zwift’s new Scotland map. After two thrilling events (one for men, one for women), each consisting of three fast and extremely close races, Denmark’s Bjørn Andreassen and the Netherlands’ Loes Adegeest were crowned world champions.

86 riders started the men’s race, which took place in Zwift’s new Scotland world. A new map unveiled in early February and designed for the World Championship races. To win, Andreassen first had to get through the first two stages. At the end of the first, called The Punch, only the first thirty finishers qualified for the next stage, The Climb. This allowed the first 10 riders to cross the finish line to participate in the final stage, The Podium.
Denmark’s Bjørn Andreassen secured a crushing victory at the 2023 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships. After demonstrating strategic restraint in the first two events, he took a decisive lead in the final race, The Podium.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Jason Osborne, 2020 UCI Cycling Esports World Champion, finished in second place, ahead of his teammate Marc Mäding.

Men’s Final Results:
1. Bjørn Andreassen, Denmark
2. Jason Osborne, Germany
3. Marc Mäding, Germany

The Netherlands’ Loes Adegeest secured the title for the second consecutive time as UCI Cycling Esports World Champion. Discreet in the middle of the peloton of the 87 best female Zwift riders, she managed to play her cards right at the opportune moment in the next two races, proving that she had come to win.

In the final, the Dutch rider deployed a Burrito PowerUp at the right moment, which allowed her to break away in the sprint to definitively leave behind Great Britain’s Zoe Langham and the USA’s Jacquie Godbe.

While Loes had shown impressive patience in the first two races, she firmly took control of the last one, contested over six laps on Zwift’s Glasgow Crit course. The Dutch rider led the peloton through four of the six eliminations, choosing to use her speed to gain an advantage, instead of attempting a sprint to quickly break away from the peloton. A crushing and energy-intensive tactic, which contrasted with that deployed by the other riders, who stayed sheltered in the peloton longer to avoid elimination in favor of a final sprint.

Women’s Final Results:
1. Loes Adegeest, Netherlands
2. Zoe Langham, Great Britain
3. Jaqueline Godbe, USA
