The Strava subscription platform continues to deliver a first-class digital experience designed to inspire and motivate its active community. The addition of FATMAP’s 3D mapping technology facilitates the discovery, experience, and sharing of outdoor adventures.
Strava, the subscription platform at the heart of connected fitness, has announced the acquisition of FATMAP, a mobile application for discovering, planning, navigating, and remembering outdoor adventures. This acquisition will give Strava subscribers access to FATMAP’s entire offering.
It is a continuation of Strava’s investment to provide a first-class digital experience for people striving for an active lifestyle. FATMAP has built proprietary global 3D mapping technology that will be integrated into all Strava services, allowing active individuals to holistically discover and plan an outdoor experience with suggestions for local guides, points of interest, and safety information.

“In 2022, nearly 10 million routes were recorded and recommended by active people around the world on Strava. Maps and tools are powerful levers to support and motivate our active community on a daily basis,” said Michael Horvath, CEO and co-founder of Strava. “We have a common mission with FATMAP: to inspire more people to move by enabling them to discover and experience the joys of the outdoors. For us, the opportunity to reinvent the role of maps and how they inspire exploration is a huge advantage for a differentiating outdoor experience.”
Designed specifically for trails and outdoor exploration, FATMAP’s technology allows users to discover, navigate, and share adventures safely, even without a mobile connection. FATMAP’s community of hikers, mountain bikers, skiers, and trail runners is already active in over 100 countries worldwide. Combined with Strava’s dataset of over 8 billion activities, this acquisition will create a universal map for human-powered experiences, whether on slopes, trails, city streets, or in the periphery.
FATMAP was founded in 2013 by Misha Gopaul and David Cowell. The company has nearly 50 highly skilled employees across Europe, who will join Strava’s workforce, particularly in the Chamonix, Berlin, and Vilnius offices. Misha Gopaul will step down from his current role as CEO of FATMAP to become Strava’s Vice President of Product, reporting to Steve Lloyd, Chief Product and Technology Officer.
Misha Gopaul said: “We launched FATMAP with the mission of making outdoor experiences more accessible. While other mapping platforms were designed for street and city navigation, we wanted to build a map designed specifically to help people explore. Joining forces with Strava opens up exciting new possibilities and will accelerate our progress in enabling millions of new people to explore the world’s wild places, safely and sustainably.”
This acquisition follows product developments made by Strava last year, including the introduction of new outdoor sports types and their enhanced suite of route-tracing features to help active people explore and fuel their adventures. It is also the second acquisition since summer 2022, when Strava integrated Recover Athletics, an injury prevention and preparation app for active people. These additions demonstrate Strava’s continuous technological investments to create value and provide active people with more tools to plan, motivate, and fuel an active lifestyle on a single platform.
Strava also recently announced the addition of 9 new sport types, including racket sports, Pilates, and HIIT. Now supporting 50 different activity types, the community platform continues to grow the benefits offered to subscribers, such as ski resort mapping, Recover Athletics prehab content, Beacon safety feature, route recommendations, online route creation, global and personal heatmaps, and segment leaderboards. With these product upgrades, Strava has adjusted its prices to reflect the new features added to the platform. These updates aim to provide daily added value to active people worldwide.
