Traditionally, early January is the time to set New Year’s resolutions. The whole challenge then lies in keeping these resolutions for as long as possible. Based on the conclusions drawn from its Year in Sport report, Strava, the social network with 100 million athletes, is offering a challenge in partnership with Major Mouvement, France’s most popular physical therapist. Named the Major Challenge, this challenge encourages French people to complete 15 hours of activity during the month of January to support the League Against Cancer. This unprecedented collaboration between Strava and an influential health personality has already attracted over 100,000 participants. Here are 3 tips to join them now…
TIP #1: TRAIN IN A GROUP
“Together, we go further,” but also faster and for longer. Strava proves this with its latest annual report. Thus, athletes who trained in pairs recorded longer distances and durations than solo athletes. In groups of three or more, the numbers were even higher. In January, cyclists and runners who participated in group activities recorded activity times that were 87% and 78% longer, respectively, than their counterparts who practiced their sport solo.

TIP #2: VARY ACTIVITIES
Starting a new activity boosts motivation. In January 2022, athletes who uploaded at least two types of sport had 75% more active days than those who practiced only one type of activity. Furthermore, their total activity duration was 62% higher, meaning they dedicated more time to sport, instead of reducing the duration of each sports activity.
TIP #3: PARTICIPATE IN THE MAJOR CHALLENGE FOR A GOOD CAUSE
To start the year with a good routine that will inspire the rest of their sporting year, Strava and Major Mouvement, the star physical therapist who makes health accessible to everyone, have created the Major Challenge. This challenge encourages participants to engage in 15 hours of physical activity throughout the month of January. Whether it’s a bike ride, a ski outing, or a walk in the park, each of Strava’s 39 sports is eligible. And while challenge participants give their best, Strava will reward their efforts by donating €1 to the League Against Cancer for each athlete who reaches the 15-hour effort goal, up to a limit of €20,000. The challenge is already a great success with over 106,000 participants to date. If they wish, finishers are also invited to make a donation to the League Against Cancer.

- The 18-29 age group sets the most goals.
- Athletes in their sixties are most likely to achieve their goals, followed by those in their forties, fifties, thirties, and finally, 18-29 year olds.
- Nearly 50% of French athletes on Strava ran at least 5 km in 2022.
- In France, the average 5 km run is 30:49.
