The newly retired rider was cycling when he was reportedly hit by a truck that then fled the scene. The Italian is said to have died instantly, despite the rapid response of emergency services.

Rebellin was 51 years old. He began his professional career in August 1992, with the GB-MG Boys team. In 2004, he achieved a famous triple, winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège, La Flèche Wallonne, and the Amstel Gold Race in the same week. In 2010, he was suspended for two years following a controversial positive test at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, before being cleared of the same test in 2015 due to a procedural error.

In 2022, Davide Rebellin was still racing for the Continental team Work Service Vitalcare Vega. He definitively ended his career on October 16 at the Veneto Classic. However, he had still raced the Monaco criterium on November 27, just three days before his tragic death.
