Trek Bicycle and World Bicycle Relief announced their second annual holiday fundraising campaign to provide reliable transportation to rural and underserved communities. Following a successful partnership in 2021, which raised $1.8 million globally, Trek has designated World Bicycle Relief’s specially designed Buffalo Bicycle as its “Bike of the Year” for the second consecutive year. Designed specifically to meet the needs of people living in rural areas, the Buffalo Bicycle is strong, simple in design, and easy to maintain. It is capable of carrying people and heavy goods over long distances and rough terrain. Until the end of the year, customers can donate to World Bicycle Relief on Trek’s website. Trek will match donations up to $500,000, with a final goal of $2.5 million for the non-profit organization.
“In partnership with World Bicycle Relief, we were able to exceed our fundraising goal in 2021 and provide 11,000 Buffalo Bicycles to communities in Africa and South America,” said Bob Burns, Vice President of Advocacy at Trek Bicycle. “We are setting even higher goals this year to get more Buffalo Bicycles into communities to help more beneficiaries conquer the challenge of distance and achieve independence.”
Trek Bicycle has been a partner of World Bicycle Relief since the organization’s inception in 2005 and has worked hand-in-hand with the association to design the first Buffalo Bicycle prototype. These bicycles are delivered to countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America and help students, healthcare workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs mobilize their communities. The bicycles are locally assembled and distributed with trained program representatives to provide quality maintenance and support and help create a more sustainable infrastructure.
“Women and girls who were once bothered, exhausted, late for school, and worse – can now reduce their commute time by more than half, build confidence, and stay in school“: Johanna Vega, Program Director in Colombia, describes the impact World Bicycle Relief and the Buffalo Bicycle have had on communities near her. “The Buffalo Bicycle has been a game-changer for them and their communities.”
