With inReach technology, you can travel anywhere in the world with peace of mind thanks to a comprehensive safety system accessible to everyone.
“Thanks to Garmin inReach’s two-way messaging and the 24/7 coordination center, assistance is always available. We are proud to provide this service, which is popular with adventurers worldwide,” says Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of Global Sales. “Whether on the way home from a trip or during an exploration, the inReach device offers the advantage of being able to quickly connect to emergency services and loved ones anywhere in the world.”
Analysis of 10,000 SOS calls
Since 2011, Garmin Responsesm (formerly GARMIN IERCC) has coordinated inReach SOS calls from over 150 countries on all seven continents.
Mountainous regions such as the Pacific Crest Trail, the Alps, and New Zealand seem to have a high propensity for SOS incidents. However, emergencies do not only occur in these remote areas. Cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Aspen have all recorded SOS incidents ranging from cycling to hiking.
No one can predict a medical emergency or injury. However, these two incidents combined account for nearly 50% of global SOS incidents.
The five activities that generated the most incidents are hiking, driving, motorcycling, climbing/mountaineering, and boating.
Nearly one in five SOS calls was triggered by a user equipped with an inReach device to help someone in need.
The second largest number of SOS calls (12%) is related to driving incidents. This proves that emergency needs do not only occur in high-risk situations. Many SOS calls involve people who simply need help on the road, in areas outside of cell phone coverage.
Incidents recorded with inReach include a variety of unique cases: a pet emergency, unexpected natural disasters, locating a child, etc.

How SOS works via inReach with Garmin Responsesm
In the event of an incident, inReach owners can trigger an SOS via the dedicated button, thanks to the 100% global coverage of the Iridium satellite network. Once an SOS is signaled, even if no other action is taken by the owner, the device automatically sends a distress message to Garmin Response. This professional emergency response coordination center is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Garmin Response will contact the person in distress, their listed emergency contacts, dedicated search and rescue personnel, and other available local resources. The inReach device will confirm that help is on the way and keep them informed until the incident is resolved.
“InReach’s two-way messaging is very useful in emergency situations. After launching an SOS, Garmin Response will ask the user questions to learn more about the incident and the initial interventions needed for the rescue, whether it’s sending a tow truck or a helicopter,” says Sarah Kramlich, Director of Services and Subscription Strategy at Garmin. “We are proud to have helped resolve these 10,000 incidents. Beyond these numbers, inReach devices provide reassurance to everyone. Indeed, two-way messaging has helped many people get out of low-risk situations where the help of a loved one sometimes proved simpler than the intervention of an emergency team.”

For explorers or mountaineers, the GPSMAP 66i is a rugged, portable GPS that offers TopoActive mapping and inReach technology, designed for outdoor activities.
The Montana 700 series allows owners to quickly and easily type messages on the touchscreen, and offers a variety of mounting options for mountain bikes, motorcycles, 4x4s, etc.

For off-the-beaten-path road-trip enthusiasts, the Tread XL series accompanies adventurers through all stages of their journey and features the necessary mapping to stay on track and communication technologies to stay in touch.

For sailors, the GPSMAP 86i offers BlueChart coastal maps. The device is buoyant, water-resistant, and perfect for a day on the boat.
