Being a mechanic in a Shimano Service Center means being trained in the latest Shimano technologies but also knowing the brand’s procedures. Shimano France therefore wanted to check if it was possible to determine who would be the Shimano Service Center mechanic most in tune with this. The event took place on September 19 with 24 competitors and 8 challenges to decide between them.

Eight challenges were therefore designed in relation to Shimano products and technologies, largely inspired by the Shimano T.E.C. online training site. Each competitor drew two challenges, one for the morning and one for the afternoon. The challenges were planned to last 30 minutes.
The brand judged three criteria:
– Adherence to Shimano procedure
– Work organization
– Time
The list of challenges was as follows:
– Diagnosis of an EP8 motor
– Maintenance procedure for a Nexus 7-speed hub
– Maintenance of a Shadow+ system on an XTR derailleur
– Maintenance of a Dura-Ace 12s Microspline hub
– Pairing Dura-Ace Di2 shifters
– Shifter settings according to a given scenario
– Road rear brake bleed
– Cassette change and road rear derailleur adjustment
The Result
The participants were delighted with their day. The competition took place in a spirit of good humor, conviviality, and exchange. The top three competitors at the end of the morning and afternoon challenges competed in a final speed challenge, in the form of a quiz also covering Shimano parts, procedures, and technologies.
The 2022 Shimano Service Center Mechanic Champion is Alexis Huguet, mechanic at the Cycl’espresso 63 store in Pont-du-Château. The podium is completed by Kevin Fournier (Veloland Laval) and Kevin Bruneau (Culture Vélo Corbeil-Essonnes), in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
The first female is Sandrine Robert, from the Veloland Perpignan store, who climbed to 13th place in the general classification. Three women were present at this first edition.
Buoyed by this initial success, Shimano France is already planning a second edition.
