Marianne Vos and Wout van Aert have excelled on every course from Namur to Zolder, winning a dozen world, European, and national titles between them. It was based on their feedback that Cervélo refined every detail of the R5-CX to elevate it to World Championship level. And good news, while the R5-CX was long reserved for professional riders, it is now available to the general public!

The ink on the Cervélo/Team Jumbo Visma contract barely dry, Cervélo engineers set to work on an all-new cyclocross bike – world champion riders indeed need bikes worthy of their name: Marianne Vos has 7 rainbow jerseys in her closet, Wout van Aert has 3 in his.

Starting from scratch, Cervélo was able to transform their preferences and requirements into a bike that has already won two World Cup victories!
The sharp minds among you may remember that this is not Cervélo’s first cyclocross bike. In 2007, the brand indeed made two R3 cyclocross frames for Jonathan Page who became – thanks to one of them – the first American to stand on a cyclocross World Cup podium.
These frames unfortunately never went into production, and a good CX bike remained until now in the “if only we had had the time” category during product meetings.
Just like the R3 Cross, the R5-CX owes much of its performance and design to the R5, with some major differences. This model stands out for its handling and fit based on Wout and Marianne’s feedback. The bottom bracket, for example, is about 11 mm higher than the new R5 to enhance handling and help clear obstacles – and this bottom bracket is threaded into the frame.
The BBRight shape and size help Cervélo build lighter and stiffer bike frames in general, but for a bike that will be pressure washed and have its bottom bracket removed at least several times a week, a threaded interface is simply more durable. Cervélo has retained the asymmetric BBRight cups, but threaded them into a T47 size hole. It is the only brand to do so, but it uses a standard internal and external T47 cup: so spare parts should not be an issue.
The D-shaped seatpost (with double clamp), not only enhances compliance but was clearly a specific request from Wout and Marianne to keep the saddle facing forward in the event of a crash. All cables run internally and the frame is only compatible with electronic drivetrains to limit the penetration of grit and water.

Ready to face torrents of mud, the frame will be available in four sizes – 51, 54, 56, and 58cm.
The R5-CX is initially available as a frameset (including frame/fork/headset, stem, handlebars, and seatpost) for a price of €4699 and in 3 colors. A complete bike version will be available by the end of the year. The first framesets are expected to arrive in stores in early September.
