“Aero is everything“: this has been Specialized’s credo for years and it is still the leitmotif of the new Tarmac. In its quest for the tube shape offering the fastest UCI-approved frame, the brand used its FreeFoil Shape Library initiated during the development of the third generation Venge. Using this library of optimized shapes, Specialized used its Win Tunnel with a prototype incorporating these shapes for validation tests. The result? A Tarmac that is the fastest tested by the brand.

While aerodynamics was paramount for the development of the new Tarmac and for the development of all the brand’s race bikes, weight has always been secondary in this development. Previously, aerodynamic bikes always meant a compromise in terms of weight – the more you reduced drag, the more weight you added. With the Tarmac SL7, the design philosophy was to keep it at or below the UCI weight limit out of the box, but without sacrificing aerodynamics. And with the help of the FreeFoil Shape Library, tools such as FEA (finite element analysis) and some engineering magic, this was achieved.

Continuing its quest to develop the most accomplished road bike possible, Specialized used its Rider-First Engineered™ philosophy to ensure that the frame is the most balanced and best-handling Tarmac to date, regardless of size. With the support of pro team riders, Specialized made modifications to the Tarmac based on feedback obtained after thousands of kilometers on the road. The frame’s behavior has been balanced, so that even the longest days in the saddle are comfortable, without sacrificing the Tarmac’s legendary handling and unparalleled dynamism.

Building on the lessons learned from the Venge, the new Tarmac SL7 uses simple integration to create a cockpit that is both clean and efficient. Hose routing has been improved for all configurations – mechanical shifting, traditional stems, round handlebars, etc. – while maintaining its aerodynamic attributes. These same features also make the new Tarmac easy to maintain and practical for everyday use.
