By combining comfort, stability, and efficiency, the Cervélo Caledonia-5 responds to this new cycling practice where pure, timed performance is not the top priority. It remains a race bike that has proven itself, especially among pros in the spring cobbled classics, but whose ultimate goal remains versatility and durability. For pleasure and adventure.

The Cervélo Caledonia-5 is an endurance-oriented bike, but it retains a sporty aesthetic.
During the upcoming Tour de France, which starts in a week, on Friday, July 1st, from Copenhagen, Denmark, you will have very few opportunities to see it. Certainly only one, on Wednesday, July 6th, on the 5th stage, between Lille Métropole and Arenberg Porte du Hainaut. On this 153 km flat course, the organizers had the good idea to include 11 cobbled sectors in the last 70 kilometers. It is there, on the roads used for the Hell of the North, that the Caledonia-5 could demonstrate, under the relentless attacks of Belgian Wout van Aert (to name but one), its raison d’être and its place in the Canadian manufacturer’s range.

On the Roubaix velodrome, the Caledonia-5 also took 2nd place last April. Roubaix, and more generally the cobbled classics and Strade Bianche-type events, are its preferred terrain. For the rest of the season, the Jumbo-Visma riders, the only World Tour team equipped by Cervélo, prefer the S5 for its aerodynamic properties or the R5 for the mountains.

The Caledonia is the balanced, comfortable, and enduring model in the range that allows the Canadian brand to respond to this new way of experiencing cycling and to these new riders: people who don’t just think about competition, who love long distances, being able to take on some dusty or even stony segments while still getting some sensations when they put down the watts or need to get home quickly. If you’re a sprinter with big thighs looking for town signs, move along; if you’re a climber with sculpted quadriceps aiming for the summits, also move along. The Caledonia-5 is not the ultimate weapon for declared sprinters or climbers.
Each to their own road, each to their own path
It is not, however, devoid of ambition(s), but it adapts to everyone’s riding style. “Pass the message to your neighbor,” Tonton David would sing. It’s a bike for rides that start at the corner café (like in Italy), then head out on bike paths to leave urban areas (like in Strasbourg), crisscross routes with unstable surfaces (like in the Estérel massif), take the small road that leads to the foot of the mountain (like in the Pyrenean foothills before a Soulor, for example) and then return in one go via a fast descent with a breathtaking view (like in the Vanoise). This is how Cervélo designed this frame and this model: by trying to bring together the rigidity technologies of the S5, to fit large tires on an R5, and to lighten an Aspero dedicated to gravel. Nothing smooth, nothing straight, quite a program! And its name is only confirmation, since “Caledonia Road” refers to the name of the street in Toronto by which Cervélo employees return from their weekly ride and indulge in an enthusiastic final sprint. An avenue whose pavement is deteriorated, riddled with treacherous holes and cracks.

Endurance Geometry
The Caledonia-5 is offered in a classic range of six sizes, from 48 to 61. The geometry is endurance-oriented, but it still retains sporty lines with aerodynamic, highly sculpted tubes of varying thicknesses. The down tube is oversized, as is the bottom bracket shell. The chainstays and fork legs are thick, while the seatstays are thin and lowered. They connect quite low on the seat tube to fully play their role in filtering out bumps and shocks.

The overall comfort of the frame is achieved through careful and calculated positioning and thickness of carbon fibers according to strategic areas and needs in terms of torsion. And only that. Cervélo did not wish to add superfluous technologies or accessories – such as elastomers – and relied solely on its engineering expertise. It is the in-house catalog of tube shapes, drawn from its long experience in road and triathlon, that defines the attributes of each Cervélo frame and, here, of the Caledonia-5. When you look closely, you notice that no two tubes are alike. All benefit from a personalized design, like the top tube, flat on top and rounded underneath. The objective: to find the compromise between stability (with a lowered bottom bracket and an increased bottom bracket-rear wheel axle distance), comfort, and performance, in that order. Other examples include 415 mm chainstays, a 74 mm BB drop, and a head angle of 72° (sizes 54 to 61, 71.5° in 51, and 70.5° in 48). On the scale, the frame weighs 936 grams and the fork 370 grams.

Generalized Integration and Modernity
Around the frame, nothing protrudes, from the cockpit to the rear derailleur. The Caledonia-5, in this test version with Sram Rival eTap AXS, is completely streamlined with full integration, especially of the cables, housing, and disc brake hoses in the cockpit. For ease of maintenance and thus user comfort, it features a “D”-shaped steerer tube with unique rings to access the hoses and cables if needed. It is equipped with specific integrated spacers that eliminate the need to disconnect everything to adjust the stem height and facilitate adapting the Stack in an “aggressive or relaxed” position (from 580 to 687 mm) depending on your fitness or the type of event.

The bolted front derailleur hanger is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy and attaches to the frame with two flat-head screws. It is easy to replace in case of damage, just as it is easy to remove completely for the installation of a single chainring system.
The tire clearance accepts sections up to 34 mm (31 mm when using mudguards, as the Caledonia has small hidden attachments).

The Caledonia-5 (high-end carbon version compared to the Caledonia) is available in five configurations (Dura Ace starting at €10,999, Red eTap AXS starting at €10,499, Force eTap AXS starting at €7,599, Ultegra Di2 starting at €7,299, and Rival eTap AXS starting at €5,399, our test version) and two colors (black or oasis). A frameset kit is available in the catalog at an entry price of €4,299.
On the Road
The Cervélo Caledonia-5 is extremely versatile. While it is only used by pros for cobbled classics, Paris-Roubaix first and foremost, for amateur cyclists and triathletes, it is an all-rounder, for riding all season and in all conditions. Comfort is the primary objective, but it remains a race bike with definite qualities on all terrains.

Visually, the geometry combines classicism and modernity. It differs completely, for example, from the emblematic S5, which one can tell, just by looking, is demanding in terms of rigidity and therefore ultimately physical fitness. In this respect, the Caledonia-5 is reassuring. This is also the first impression it leaves on the road: it is a forgiving frame that accepts difficult early seasons, fluctuating fitness, or bonks to bring you home without a hitch. Basically, it inspires confidence, and the comfort felt while riding encourages you to push your limits, whether on the number of kilometers, the roads taken, or the profile of the rides. In this regard, the Canadian brand has succeeded in its gamble, as it designed this bike to meet these new consumption patterns and cycling practices where the pure racer is becoming increasingly rare in favor of the adventurer, on asphalt as well as on trails.

We therefore appreciated the comfort of the frame, at medium as well as high speeds, on the flat as well as downhill, well aided by the wide 30 mm section Rubino Pro Tubeless tires which also provide a lot of confidence, especially when cornering, and well-being on the road. Vibration filtering is effective at the rear of the bike and very good at the front. We can feel all the absorption work of the rear triangle and especially the seatstays on damaged road sections. It “taps” slightly more at the front, with the grip of the profiled handlebar, on its upper wing-shaped part.

The Caledonia-5 is a balanced frame that responds to changes in pace… but at its own pace! Everything is fluid and smooth. It prefers progressive accelerations over brutal starts. We feel a deliberately limited rigidity so as not to break the rider over time, but on the contrary to push them to go even further. We must remember the essence of this bike: the idea is to reach Roubaix. It’s not about winning at the top of the Stelvio or winning the first mass sprint on the Tour. This contained rigidity does not prevent putting occasional intensity on the flat as well as uphill because it keeps its promise of a carbon frame designed with HM fibers. Its weight of 935 g is not the lightest on the market, but it does not feel like a limitation.

During our test, the real hindrance to the full expression of the Caledonia-5 was its rolling gear. With the DT Swiss E1800 32 Spline Tubeless Ready (aluminum) wheels that come standard with the Sram Rival eTap AXS build, it’s difficult to push the frame to its limits, as is the case, for example, when accelerating. Even maintaining some speed, these wheels are not its primary asset, and this is evident on descents, coming out of hairpins. Once launched, and given that it’s not a pure performance frame, the Caledonia-5 does the job, but this is more due to the frame’s qualities than to the wheels’, which don’t transmit all the energy expended in pedaling. This is even more noticeable on false flats and short climbs when you need to put down the watts. The bike lacks pep and responsiveness. This is somewhat a shame, but it also helps keep the price around €5,000. Not bad, considering the soaring prices of bikes! A second pair of wheels, more aerodynamic and responsive, would be welcome if you want to push the performance aspect or start a granfondo with the idea of competing for a ranking.

Over the kilometers, the Cervélo Caledonia-5 leaves an impression of ease and maneuverability. In our test version, it is supported by the very pleasant Sram Rival eTap AXS groupset mentioned above. The American manufacturer’s 12-speed wireless electronic transmission is beyond reproach, whether we’re talking about gear changes or braking, which is both powerful and silent.

To match the bike’s philosophy, the gear range is extremely wide with a 48×35 double chainring in front and a 10-36 cassette in the rear. This means you can tackle any road. The levers contribute to the bike’s overall comfort with a pleasant and wide grip.

The Caledonia-5 Rival eTap AXS loves long endurance or tempo sessions where it will prioritize your durability in the saddle. It demonstrates great comfort and excellent stability on descents. The steering is responsive, direct, and precise in cornering sequences. You can easily correct your lines. It’s pleasant, reassuring, and makes you want to enjoy the curves, especially with this wide tire section. Due to its characteristics and equipment, it inevitably lags behind on ascents. A disadvantage unless you want to take them “casually,” without pushing too hard. To make it more dynamic, simply opt for taller and more responsive wheels and slightly reduce the tire width to open up a new range of expression. Finally, as it is set up, you can also try your hand, without fear, on “clean” gravel segments. From adventure to adventure.
