The French Triathlon Federation has chosen the Dunkirk triathlon for the 15th consecutive time as a host stage for the Triathlon Grand Prix. Indeed, the Dunkirk Triathlon (Nord) will celebrate its 35th anniversary this Sunday, June 19! For the occasion, this event will bring together both the 19 Men’s teams and the 18 Women’s teams competing in D1, as well as all the D2 teams for whom this will be the 1st stage. In total, the Dunkirk triathlon will host the 70 best clubs in France!

On the menu for this Triathlon, to start, 750 m of swimming in the commercial and inner harbor basins, passing under the citadel bridge. After the first transition, the competitors (5 per team) will have to cycle for 20 km through a flat urban circuit of 4 km to be completed 5 times. Finally, this Sprint format event will end with 2 loops of 2.5 km around the inner harbor basins.

Here is the state of the forces present.

Victorious in the first round in Fréjus (Var) for both women and men, Poissy Triathlon will fiercely defend its leading positions.

Women’s GP: Poissy, deprived of its best elements

Poissy, which has dominated the Grand Prix since 2011, will have to compete without its best triathletes in this northern stage.

Cassandre Beaugrand, who just won last week’s WTCS Leeds round, and her teammate Léonie Périault, with whom she won the bronze medal in the mixed relay at the Tokyo Olympics, will indeed be absent. Sandra Dodet, winner of the first round in Fréjus, is also not expected to be in Dunkirk.

Fortunately, the Yvelines club’s talent pool is deep. Poissy Triathlon will mainly rely on Kristelle Congi (the very recent French Champion) and Léa Coninx (13th in the Abu Dhabi WTCS at the end of last year) to win.

Metz Triathlon, its runner-up, will also face significant absences such as Jeanne Lehair and Pauline Landron. To compensate for their absences, the Lorraine club will mainly rely on Hungarian Zsanett Bragmayer (winner of the London Arena Games) and Margot Garabedian (aquathlon world champion).

Among the other notable individuals in this 2nd stage, we will find at the start the members of Vals du Dauphiné Olympic, Julie Derron (3rd in Fréjus) and Angelica Olmo (3rd in the U23 World Championships in 2018), Liévin’s Kira Hedgeland (4th in the U23 World Championships) and Gray’s Mathilde Gautier (4th in Fréjus and very recent winner of a European Cup in Coimbra, Portugal).

Men’s GP: towards a new Poissy-Metz duel?

In the Men’s race, leader Poissy Triathlon will have to do without mixed relay Olympic medalist Dorian Coninx and Tom Richard (3rd in Fréjus). However, they can count on their new recruit, Jawad Abdelmoula, winner in Fréjus and already on the podium (3rd) in Dunkirk last year. The Moroccan will be supported by Anthony Pujades (3rd in the recent Sprint European Championship), by the 2021 French Vice-Champion Antoine Duval, and by the unshakeable Aurélien Raphaël.

Second in the standings, Metz will present a quality quintet with, first of all, two athletes who have just participated in the Duathlon World Championships: Maxime Hueber-Moosbrugger (3rd) and Nathan Guerbeur (6th and 2021 World Champion).

The other Metz athletes have also recently shown their form: Thomas Sayer (recent French champion), Casimir Moine (3rd in the French championships), and Valentin Morlec (12th in the Arzachena World Cup). However, the absence of Belgian Noah Servais, 4th in Fréjus, is noted.

But this second round will especially allow us to see top international triathletes back in the Grand Prix. Just look at this.

The Dunkirk public will notably have the chance to see the top two from the WTCS in Leeds, New Zealander Hayden Wilde (3rd in the Tokyo Olympics) and Léo Bergère. They represent the colors of the Triathlon Club de Liévin and Saint-Jean-de-Monts Vendée Triathlon, respectively.

In addition to Wilde, the northern club, 9th in the standings, can also count on Australians Matthew Hauser (4th in the Yokohama WTCS) Brandon Copeland (32nd in the Leeds WTCS) as well as Briton Harry Leleu (14th in Fréjus) and Raphaël Montoya. This team composition should allow them to move up in the standings.

For its part, the Vendée club, 4th in the standings, will have Louis Vitiello and Max Stapley as other assets.

The other French headliner will be Pierre Le Corre (4th in Yokohama and 13th in Leeds) who wears the colors of Les Sables Vendée Triathlon, currently 3rd in the provisional standings. Thanks to the presence of Hungarian Gabor Faldum (21st in Yokohama) and Japanese Kenji Nener (19th in Leeds), the Vendée team should also fight for a podium spot.

In short, the cards should be reshuffled during this second round, to the delight of the spectators!

The second stage of the Triathlon Grand Prix in Dunkirk can be followed live and in replay on the F.F TRI Facebook and YouTube pages.
