Strava expands its offering with new sports and outdoor route recommendations for its subscribers.
Source: Press Release
Strava, the leading social platform for athletes and the world’s largest sports community with over 100 million athletes, today announced a new interface to support outdoor sports. These updates include new activity types and enhanced navigation features to help athletes explore and fuel their next adventures.
Some context to begin: outdoor sports are experiencing significant growth worldwide. This trend is reflected on Strava:
- Over the past two years, the number of hikes uploaded to Strava has increased by over 100%.
- Nature sports, including mountain biking, hiking, and trail running, are growing 2x faster than sports practiced on pavement, such as road cycling.

Four new sports join Strava
Strava today adds 4 new outdoor sports to the list of available activities: Trail running, gravel, mountain biking, and e-mountain biking.
These new sport categories join cycling, running, hiking, training, yoga, and many others among nearly 40 activity types supported by Strava for all its athletes.
Data tailored to each practice
To allow athletes to explore freely, Strava now offers trail networks to its subscribers. They highlight popular trails and their starting points. These route recommendations are specific to each activity and adjustable according to individual preferences regarding distance and elevation gain.
A multitude of new information and route details are now offered, including difficulty, community times, monthly and time-of-day activity history, and visualization of elevation and difficulty data. And for greater peace of mind, Strava subscribers will also be able to access all uploaded routes when offline or out of network coverage.

Mapping highlights terrain
Strava also integrates its 3D mapping into activity sharing, which means 3D maps will appear in athletes’ activity feeds. The ability to choose a 3D map to customize an activity is only available to subscribers, but all Strava athletes can see this map style in their feed.
