Sportive: Cannes hosts the first French stage of the 2022 GFNY circuit

Sunday, March 27, 2022, Cannes will host the first French stage of the 2022 Gran Fondo New-York (GFNY) world circuit. Between 400 and 500 riders are expected on the mythical Boulevard de la Croisette to take the start of this brand new event and explore the extraordinary playground of the Alpes-Maritimes, between the coast, the mid-mountains with balconies overlooking the Mediterranean, and the Préalpes d’Azur.

Two courses are offered: the first timed course of 122 km (2,000 m elevation gain) will pass through Tanneron, Lake St-Cassien, Montauroux, Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne, and the heights of Fayence before returning to Cannes via Les Adrets-de-l’Estérel and Mandelieu-La Napoule; the second untimed course of 66 km (1,023 m elevation gain) also climbs the slopes of Tanneron, descends towards Montauroux, then directly follows Lake St-Cassien before returning to the Festival city via Les Adrets-de-l’Estérel and Mandelieu-La Napoule, like the long course.

The GFNY Cannes thus enriches the municipal program Cannes, Capital of Outdoor Sports, launched in 2016 by Mayor David Lisnard, himself a great sportsman (an accomplished marathon runner, cyclist, and occasional triathlete) who promotes natural sites, infrastructures, sporting events, and makes sport accessible to all, from Sunday athletes to confirmed practitioners. Furthermore, this new event complements Cannes’ offering of events dedicated to cycling with the Gentlemen de Cannes (the 71st edition took place on Sunday, February 6) and the La Lazaridès sportive (27th edition on April 23). Finally, the City of Cannes is currently working on organizing a mountain bike ride in the city center, inspired by Urban Trails.
