Combining the aerodynamic performance of its Nitrogen frame with the weight and climbing ability of its Gallium Pro frame, this was the challenge set by the Argon18 brand, which sought to bring together the qualities of its two high-end frames.
In detail, the new range comes in Sum Pro and Sum versions.

Both lightweight, fast, and designed for long rides, the all-new Sum is the bike that should allow its owner to do everything, from classics to criteriums, through mountains and all other challenges encountered on the road:
– Internal analyses have shown that the Sum’s aerodynamic performance is equivalent to that of the Nitrogen Disc and 9% superior to that of the Gallium Pro Disc. Added to this is a reduced weight. The down tube, top tube, and chainstays have been optimized to achieve the best balance between size, material thickness, and aerodynamic performance. The hourglass-shaped head tube reduces drag while remaining stiff and light.
– Design details such as lowered seatstays and a revised seat tube allow the Sum to show a 30 to 35% improvement in vibration absorption compared to the latest generation of the Gallium Pro. The geometry has also been revised to ensure both superior handling and better positioning regardless of frame size.
– The Sum features a non-exclusive cockpit that allows for a wider choice of handlebars while fully integrating the cables. It also comes with an updated version of the “house” 3D system, which ensures maximum adjustment window, easy adjustments, and rock-solid stiffness. The Sum also offers generous tire clearance (30c).

The Sum comes in two versions, the Sum Pro and the Sum, available as frame kits (starting from €3799 and €2799 respectively, as frame kits) or as complete bikes with different build options.

Argon 18 welcomes the UCI ProTeam Team Novo Nordisk to its ranks and provides them with a fleet of Sum Pros for the 2022 season. As the world’s first all-diabetic professional cycling team, Team Novo Nordisk competes in the pro world with the goal of inspiring, educating, and empowering those living with diabetes.

In terms of quantified performance, in a simulation of the 2019 Tour de France La Planche des Belles Filles stage (approximately 3500 m of elevation gain), Argon18 was able to establish that the net gain of the Sum compared to the Gallium Pro Disc was 75 seconds.

Aero features:
– Hourglass-shaped head tube that reduces drag while being stiff and light
– Fork legs profiled and flared outwards to move airflow away from the down tube
– Down tube dimension optimized for aerodynamics and lightness, tested with water bottles
– Very thin (10 mm) and slightly arched seatstays, for more aerodynamics and better vibration absorption
– Imposing down tube and head tube junction to increase front-end stiffness, ensure good airflow, and eliminate turbulence behind the head tube

Weight-related features:
The Sum’s design process eliminated any superfluous weight in the new aerodynamic tube shapes, while maintaining maximum power transfer.
– Pro-level optimized carbon layup (Sum Pro: 850g; Sum: 890g; painted medium frames)
– Profiled seat tube and seatpost to lighten the frame’s weight
– Chainstays sized to keep weight as light as possible and maximize power transfer
Availability: Fall 2022.
