New Factor Hanzō

Factor presents the Hanzō, a time trial bike announced as “the fastest in the world” according to the brand, thanks to perfect aerodynamic adaptation to the new UCI rules. A closer look at an exceptional machine.

On the Hanzō, Factor was able to approach aerodynamic development in a radically new way, pushing the limits of what UCI regulations allow for tube sections. Factor therefore claims that with the Hanzō, it has been able to design arguably the fastest UCI-compliant time trial frame in the world. It should be noted that not all triathlon bikes are compliant for road events.

This evolution is primarily reflected in a drastically reduced frontal area, with an extremely sharp head tube, almost like a blade, thanks to the revision of the UCI rule that allows a minimum tube section of 10 mm (instead of 25 mm previously). The result is spectacular.

The fork and frame assembly is thus the thinnest ever designed, when viewed from the front. Aerodynamic profile sections are applied along the entire 16 cm length allowed by the alignment of the head tube and down tube. The head tube is the narrowest ever designed, forming a super-thin front end with the fork.

All tube aerodynamic profiles have been carefully selected to reduce drag at all angles. Large tire clearance reduces the interaction effect between the aerodynamics of the fork/frame and the wheel. The Hanzō naturally benefits from full integration, ample tire clearance, and also great compatibility with the most popular custom extension manufacturers, in order to best adapt to different positions.

Optimized Kamm Tail shape

The Kamm Tail tube shape, with a truncated rear section, allows for weight savings without losing the aero advantage. Nevertheless, a poorly designed section and a bad association between the different tubes can have the opposite effect to the one desired. As Factor owns its own factory, the brand integrates the required level of precision into the manufacturing process to optimize this design feature.

A revisited rear triangle

The seat tube/seatstay junction, with its wide seatstays, smooths airflow between the rider’s legs, while optimizing stiffness. The rear part of the seat tube hugs the shape of the rear wheel to limit airflow. The reuse of the Factor SLiCK seatpost allows the Di2 battery to be slipped inside.

The Hanzō and the Hour Record attempt

When Alex Dowsett began discussing with Factor his desire to attempt the Hour Record again, the brand took the opportunity to test the Hanzō and make it the fastest aerodynamic bike available. Factor dedicated over a year of design efforts to the Hanzō track bike, and remains proud of the results and its involvement in Alex Dowsett’s attempt, with a track-adapted version of the Hanzo TT bike, 3D printed titanium chainstays by Silca, and exceptional aerodynamic performance in low yaw conditions.
