At the very top of its wide range of apparel, Shimano offers the S-Phyre series. Like the shoes of the same name used by professionals, the S-Phyre kit is focused on aerodynamics and performance. Jerseys and bib shorts are available in two versions, including the Flash, for normal summer conditions.

Since the first generation of S-Phyre shoes in 2017, Shimano has continuously evolved its range of equipment of the same name, in collaboration with the most demanding World Tour riders. The S-Phyre collection has now expanded to include jerseys, bib shorts, long tights, jackets, gilets, base layers, socks, arm warmers, leg warmers, gloves, and glasses. From a good foot hold in the shoe to the necessary clear vision to read all terrain characteristics, and uncompromising saddle comfort, each element results from meticulous observation of the conditions encountered by exceptional athletes on all roads of the world by the Japanese brand’s engineers.

The S-Phyre Flash summer kit benefits from the overall characteristics of the range, with a sum of features designed to offer an anatomical and aerodynamic cut that promotes efficiency and comfort while pedaling. The S-Phyre Leggera version is designed for very hot conditions, with more mesh panels for a very light feel on the skin. But tested in normal early summer conditions in the northern part of France between 20 and 25°C, the S-Phyre Flash kit proved ideal.

Aerodynamic Jersey
The combination of several thoughtfully placed fabrics on the jersey allows it to hug the curves of the torso while accelerating heat dissipation to maintain a good body temperature during intense effort. The shoulder shape, elongated and slightly compressive sleeves for good muscle support, and the limited stretch of the fabric on the back eliminate wrinkles, while a flat elastic band with silicone dots at the lower back and flat pockets keep the jersey perfectly in place in an aggressive riding position. Available in three colors, the Shimano S-Phyre Flash jersey has a suggested retail price of €169.99.

Modern and Comfortable Bib Shorts
On the S-Phyre Flash bib shorts, there’s a four-layer chamois for breathability and vibration absorption, as well as elongated thighs with a slightly compressive fabric that holds perfectly in place without causing a constricting sensation on the muscles while improving blood circulation, flat straps, and a breathable material at the back. Minimal seams ensure good comfort. The absence of a gripping zone on the thighs is particularly appreciated and marks the difference compared to less high-end models. The S-Phyre Flash bib shorts are only available in black and have a suggested retail price of €199.99.

Complementary Accessories
The jersey and bib shorts combine with the S-Phyre sleeveless base layer, constructed seamlessly and with moisture-wicking and heat-dissipating materials. The anatomical design prevents wrinkles under the jersey, allowing it to be worn like a second skin. A bit thick at first, and especially quite long at the stomach and lower back, it is quickly forgotten in temperatures around 20°C. This base layer has a suggested retail price of €85.

The S-Phyre socks, meanwhile, are designed to combine with the shoes of the same name, with a seamless front section, padded patterns on the top of the foot to soften contact with the upper and the RC902 closure system, an anti-slip heel to secure the foot during extreme traction phases, and finally ventilation at the sole to prevent excessive heat. But these socks are, of course, also very comfortable with other shoes. Available in four colors, they have a suggested retail price of €20.

Finally, for early morning starts, or to tackle descents or light showers, the kit can be complemented by the S-Phyre sleeveless gilet. It offers a very close-fitting cut, windproof and water-repellent materials on the front to protect from coolness or splashes, slits at the back to access jersey pockets, elastic shoulders and hem for good support during effort, and light, stretchy fabrics on the back to ensure good breathability. Reflective elements on the back improve visibility, and the gilet is also very compressible, making it easy to store in a pocket when the temperature rises. The S-Phyre gilet has a suggested retail price of €119.99.

On the Road
During spring and summer rides, the ensemble provides an optimal feeling of lightness and breathability, while cutting through the air thanks to the very close-fitting cut, even if we cannot measure any gain in terms of stopwatch or energy savings. But it is undeniable that for performance enthusiasts, it is much more efficient to ride with this type of very fitted kit rather than with a loose, wrinkled jersey.
The jersey sleeves are long and quite tight around the arms, which may seem surprising at first, but it is quickly forgotten while riding. The same goes for the bib shorts’ legs, which extend very low. However, their construction makes them very comfortable during effort, and you never feel constricted while pedaling. The chamois is sewn here to favor a low and forward position, so the S-Phyre bib shorts are more suitable for fast rides than for contemplative outings. Still, in terms of support, Shimano’s high-end is, for example, a little less comfortable than a Castelli Premio Black, certainly a bit more expensive, but which targets the same audience. The chamois here is a little less soft, and it tends to move a bit more and thus create some unpleasant rubbing after three or four hours of cycling.

Although quite thick and rather long, the base layer wears transparently in moderate heat. A very good mention for the sleeveless gilet as well, superbly cut and providing a life-saving windproof layer during summer showers. It wrinkles very little and takes up little space in the jersey pocket. The S-Phyre ensemble represents the best Shimano has to offer for performance. But there are, of course, other outfits more suitable for less fast or less fit cyclists, or for those looking for more practical aspects, as with the Evolve kit that we will test in the coming days.
