Shimano France is partnering with the pioneer in bicycle identification to provide customers with a marking solution through its retail network. Since January 1, 2021, sellers of new bicycles (in store or online) must affix the identification mark and register the bicycle owner in the National Unique File of Identified Bicycles (FNUCI, operational since March 9, 2021).

Currently booming, the bicycle market is nevertheless hampered by the numerous thefts suffered particularly by urban cyclists. In 2018, nearly 300,000 bicycles were reported stolen; however, of the small half of bicycles recovered, only 2 to 3% are returned due to lack of identification*. In order to make it easier to return bicycles to their owners, a specific measure of the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) has just come into force: the marking of new bicycles has been mandatory since January 1, 2021.

With this distribution agreement, Shimano France is thus committed to protecting bicycles against theft.

The marking consists of applying an identifier provided by Bicycode from the national file manager (FNUCI) to the bicycle frame. It must be indelible and easily readable when the bicycle is parked. It can be a micro-percussion engraving on the frame protected by a sticker, or a secure adhesive that itself bears the identifier (Adcolite label). Thanks to this marking, law enforcement agencies (National Police, Municipal Police, and Gendarmerie) can now quickly identify the owner of a bicycle in case of theft and thus return their property to them.

Adcolite labels, distributed by Shimano France, have been available in stores for several weeks. These durable labels are perfectly suited to bicycle identification requirements, they benefit from an ultra-short installation time and one of the lowest prices on the market (€9.90 Recommended Retail Price, label plus registration). The Adcolite label is suitable for all types of bicycles: carbon, aluminum, steel, titanium. Micro-percussion is reserved only for steel or aluminum bicycles.

Bicycle owners receive an email once the registration is done by the seller on the FNUCI. They can then create their dedicated spaces on Bicycode where they can report the theft, loss, or sale of their bicycles. In case of sale, they can then transfer the bicycle, and the new owner can keep the identifier already affixed to the bicycle. There is also the possibility of adding several bicycles to the same account.

Individuals wishing to mark a bicycle already in their possession can go to a store to have the Bicycode marking done.

In addition, the marking of used bicycles sold by professionals will also be mandatory from July 1st.
