The biggest newspapers are talking about it, in Germany and elsewhere: Tocsen has created the first smart fall sensor. Due to its small size, it is ideal for mountain biking, cycling, skiing or horse riding. Easy to apply to the helmet, it connects to the app in a second, sends an SOS to the emergency contact numbers saved and could save many lives. Why? The story of this product and this brand – a start-up born thanks to three brave boys and one of their friends in difficulty – is truly special. Discover it below.

An idea that can save your life or the life of a friend
Tom is a boy like many others who, in September 2017, decides to go for a short bike ride. He is alone but he has already ridden this path in the woods a thousand times. He feels safe.
A moment of inattention, perhaps a root, and he falls. He is wearing a helmet but his head still hits the ground violently and he loses consciousness. There is no one around: Tom regains consciousness, he doesn’t know where he is, doesn’t remember anything and can’t call for help. He faints again, over and over again. Finally, by sheer chance, passers-by find him and help him. Fortunately, Tom is fine today. But… What if no one had found him? What if help had arrived too late? We all know stories like this and many friends have not been as lucky as Tom…

Alexander Schumacher, an engineer specializing in automotive engineering, Andreas Botsch, a graduate in economics, and Malte Buttjer, with years of experience in digital communication, are three of Tom’s friends who are passionate about bikes. Deeply affected by their companion’s mishap, with whom they had done many rides, they decide that safety should no longer be left to chance. As Alexander Schumacher explains: “We knew very clearly what kind of emergency system we wanted to create: it had to be 100% reliable, easy to use and, above all, not hinder the pleasure of cycling“.
The answer is Tocsen: the combination of a small precision detector and a free smartphone app. As soon as the sensor detects an impact, the app asks the user how they are. If they do not respond within 30 seconds, Tocsen automatically sends a distress call indicating the exact GPS position to both emergency contact numbers and people in the community nearby. The community includes all users with a Tocsen sensor on their helmet as well as all people who have downloaded the application and made themselves available to the community if needed.

The first series products were manufactured through crowdfunding and the start-up began selling its detectors on its online store. Tocsen now has 16 employees and its products are distributed in the largest specialized cycling and outdoor equipment stores in Germany. The Tocsen community includes several thousand members.
A winning idea, so much so that the giants Alpina and UVEX, leading manufacturers of cycling and outdoor helmets, have decided to integrate the device into some of their models.

Small and extremely lightweight, this impact detector is finally available in France. You can buy it online and download the application in English, both for the external helmet version and for the version integrated into certain Alpina and Uvex models.
