From their homes, 132 cyclists (78 men / 54 women) from all over the world met in “Watopia”, the name of one of ZWIFT’s virtual worlds. Their goal: to make their avatar move as fast as possible by pedaling on a 50 km course (identical for men and women), using their indoor trainer connected to a screen.
For the next 12 months, the first winners of this new UCI-sanctioned discipline, South African Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and German Jason Osborne, will wear the iconic rainbow jersey.
It was necessary to show strategy and make the best use of one’s energy and game bonuses to adapt to a course praised by Zwifters for its versatility. An exercise perfectly mastered by the two new world champions.
At the end of the race, Jason Osborne declared: “I knew I was in good shape and well prepared. I have good one-minute power, which can be significant in this type of event. My main goal was to stay calm, navigate the peloton, and save all my energy for the last 80 seconds.”
On the French side, Jordan Sarrou, 2020 cross-country mountain bike world champion, finished in 53rd position, while Marie Le Net took 44th place overall.
