Five years after its last edition in 2016, the Balearic Island of Mallorca will once again host an IRONMAN triathlon on May 15, 2021. Usually held in September from 2014 to 2016, the event will take place in the spring and will mark the start of the European full IRONMAN season, one week after the Zafiro IRONMAN 70.3 Alcudia-Mallorca on May 8, 2021.
With this additional race, the number of IRONMAN events in Europe increases to 18. “We have always had a special relationship with Mallorca, ever since we launched IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca almost ten years ago,” said Stefan Petschnig, Managing Director of IRONMAN Europe, Middle East and Africa. “The change of date for the event from September to May will offer athletes a great way to race early in the season.”
With the return of this event, Spain now has four IRONMAN events: Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote (May 22, 2021), IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz (July 11, 2021) and IRONMAN Barcelona (October 3, 2021). In addition, Spain will also host four IRONMAN 70.3 events: IRONMAN 70.3 Marbella (April 25, 2021), Zafiro IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca (May 8, 2021), IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona (October 3, 2021), IRONMAN 70.3 Lanzarote (October 9, 2021).
IRONMAN Mallorca will begin with an iconic single-loop 3.8 km (2.4 miles) swim in the beautiful Bay of Alcúdia, which has seen fast times in the past. Athletes will then head out onto the spectacular 180 km (112 miles) single-loop bike course from Port de Pollença to the scenic Serra de Tramuntana before returning to T2 in Port d’Alcúdia. The 42.2 km (26 miles) four-loop run course takes athletes on an out-and-back route along the Bay of Alcúdia before finishing their adventure just steps from the waterfront.
The fastest times at IRONMAN Mallorca were recorded by two Germans. Timo Bracht crushed the competition with a time of 8h17’22 in 2015. The same year, his compatriot Daniela Bleymehl finished the race in 9h23’19. There were also local heroes such as Spaniard Carlos López Díaz who won the 2016 edition.
Air temperature in Mallorca in May is expected to be around 23 to 24 degrees Celsius (73 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit) and water temperature typically hovers around 19 degrees Celsius (66 degrees Fahrenheit). IRONMAN Mallorca 2021 will offer 40 qualifying slots for the 2021 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
