C.B.T. Italia ARTIK-09: a road e-bike with a very long range

C.B.T. Italia is an Italian company based in Cuneo, specializing in the manufacture of carbon fiber frames and racing bikes. The brand is launching an electric bike on the European market that is set to make its mark: the Artik-09.

Named Artik-09, this bike is the result of several years of development, which led to the design, conception and production, entirely Made in Italy, of a high-tech (patented) battery, a high-performance hub motor and an app capable of controlling the power delivered according to heart rate and gradients encountered.

The Artik-09’s carbon fiber frame has the same geometry as C.B.T. Italia’s traditional models. The battery is entirely designed and manufactured in Italy, in Cuneo, using 3D technology.
Perfectly integrated into the frame’s down tube, it is easily removable and can therefore be recharged anywhere, without having to transport the bike. Although lightweight (only 2300 g – one and a half millimeter thick aluminum casing), it is market-leading in terms of power: it guarantees a nominal capacity of 378 Wh and an effective capacity of 430 Wh, which is + 52% charge compared to traditional models on the market. This autonomy means you can leave the extra battery at home.

A long-range battery

Manufactured with high-end components, with Samsung (or Panasonic) cells and a battery charger with Phoenix connector, this battery is a technological gem, designed to integrate harmoniously and functionally with the frame. The frame’s particular “horseshoe” shape allows the battery to remain attached to the bike by an automatic fastening system, which prevents vibrations, particularly dreaded by road cycling enthusiasts. With the same objective, the tolerances of the frame’s composite tubes have been pushed to the maximum (around a tenth of a millimeter), to obtain a homogeneous assembly, without movement or noise.

A custom-made motor

The Artik-09’s motor was custom-designed to meet the three requirements of the project: aesthetic requirement (an electric road bike whose clean lines recall a traditional racing bike), functional requirement (high power delivery), and the best weight distribution, in order to offer a product that, when used without a battery, has nothing to envy the brand’s finest flagships.

It was possible to satisfy all three conditions thanks to the miniaturization of components and the original positioning of the motor, mounted on the rear wheel: an innovative, brushless and gearless system, very efficient on climbs and offering a reduction ratio of up to 13.5:1.
The thrust at the hub means there are no power losses due to chain transmission, and all 250 real watts are transmitted to the wheel: the motor’s efficiency therefore reaches 91%. In addition, the rear positioning allows for optimal weight distribution while giving the frame a sleek design.

Thanks to its removable battery and rolling resistance similar to that of a bike with a normal hub, the Artik-09 can even be used without electric assistance. By replacing the rear dropouts, it is possible to mount a traditional road wheel.

A dedicated application

An electronic board integrated into the motor allows communication between the smartwatch, supplied with the bike by C.B.T., and the motor unit: it is thus possible to set the assistance level according to the chosen heart rate. A dedicated app (“CBT E-bike”) allows you to customize the desired power output, according to heart rate, or, thanks to a gyroscope, according to the road gradient.

The Artik-09 weighs 12.6 kg in size 54 and benefits from high-end components.

All the electronic components of the Artik-09 have been certified by the independent laboratory Teseo (Eiffage group), which collaborates with very high-level companies in the aerospace, aeronautical, automotive and military fields.

Produced in five sizes, from 49 to 58, the Artik-09 is available on the market at a price of €5100. Before being delivered to the buyer, each bike is tested on a test bench, and the battery undergoes a complete charge and discharge cycle, simulating a 100 km ride.
