The rumor had already circulated on social networks, forums, and in the pelotons. BMC confirmed the information today, as the Swiss brand will strengthen its presence in the World Tour peloton starting in January 2021, by becoming the bike sponsor of the AG2R Citroën Team.
“We are delighted to announce that the riders of the AG2R Citroën Team will be riding our bikes from 2021,” said David Zurcher, CEO of BMC Switzerland. “Racing is a deeply rooted component of BMC’s DNA, and we were keen to strengthen our presence at the highest level of road cycling. A shared vision of the sport and an ambitious sporting project quickly led us to consider a shared future with Vincent Lavenu’s team.”
The long-established French team in the World Tour peloton opens a new chapter next year with car manufacturer Citroën, which joins AG2R as a major sponsor, and with a new sporting strategy focused on the Spring Classics. “We firmly believe that with the Teammachine SLR01 and the Timemachine Road, we have the best bikes to help the team achieve its high goals,” added Zurcher.
Vincent Lavenu, General Manager of the AG2R Citroën Team, is also delighted to have the Swiss brand on board: “We have been looking for a strong partner for a few years, and I am very proud that our program is supported by such a great and innovative bike brand. I am convinced that it will perfectly accompany our team in its quest for success at the highest level.”
A major transfer for the AG2R Citroën team in the upcoming off-season, Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet is also looking forward to riding BMC bikes again: “I won Paris-Roubaix, the Rio Olympics, and all my major victories on the BMC Teammachine SLR01, and I have so many memories from my time on BMC bikes. The AG2R Citroën Team project was very attractive to me for various reasons, and the chance to ride BMC again ultimately made my decision easy.”
The AG2R Citroën Team riders will benefit from the new Teammachine SLR01, Timemachine Road, and Timemachine for the next three seasons (2021 to 2023). After Phonak (2002-2006), BMC Racing Team (2007-2018), and Qhubeka-NTT (2019-2021), AG2R Citroën Team will be the fourth road team sponsored by BMC Switzerland.
