New Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 Disc Wheels

With a new, lighter 45 mm Tubeless rim without rim tape and new technology to make this type of tire easier to use, the new Mavic Cosmic SLR 45 for disc brakes are announced as versatile and improve performance on all types of terrain.

Mavic announces for the 2021 vintage a simplified wheel range where each model is the best in its category in terms of performance, reliability and ease of maintenance. Each model is still designed, developed and validated in France, and handmade in a factory controlled by the brand in Europe. The wheels are now simpler to distinguish by their name: Cosmic for the carbon wheel range and Ksyrium for the aluminum wheel range. Only special wheels for track, time trial or Gravel (Ellipse, iO, Allroad) remain in the catalog.

The models are then declined in four range levels: S, SL, SLR and Ultimate. Then comes the rim depth indication: 32, 40, 45 and 65 (for mm).

The Cosmic SLR 45 Disc are thus positioned as high-end 45 mm carbon wheels, for disc braking, which ensure performance and versatility on almost all terrains, thanks to their weight of 1470 g per pair, and are announced with a selling price of €1850. This weight is thus to be compared to competing models in the same category that require the use of rim tape, unlike the new Cosmic.

Fore Carbon Technology

Compared to the previous Cosmic, the new SLR 45 are distinguished by a new rim with Fore Carbon technology, which integrates the spoke head into the rim profile and not into the rim bed. This offers several advantages, starting with a weight reduction where it is most important, i.e. at the periphery of the wheel. Then, this technology makes it possible to do without rim tape, which also saves at least 30 g per wheel on the final assembly, while ensuring better sealing to maintain the correct inflation pressure.

This results in a lighter laminated carbon rim with only localized reinforcement, metal inserts co-molded with the rim, and spokes directly screwed into the insert. This technology also avoids any risk of rim bed perforation in the event of spoke breakage.

Easier Tubeless tire mounting

From the 2021 vintage, all Mavic Tubeless wheels become compatible with all ETRTO-compliant Tubeless tires. To improve tire mounting, the brand has slightly modified the design of the UST rim contours. The central groove is wider, which facilitates mounting, even with tires whose beads are quite wide. This new design also improves tire retention once installed, even at very low pressure.

As a result, Mavic wheels are no longer offered with tires. Mavic UST tires are, however, still available aftermarket.

Naca Profile

The rims still benefit from a NACA profile and are wind tunnel tested to minimize drag and increase stability in crosswinds. The Cosmic SLR 45 thus benefit from a rim depth of 45 mm, with an external width of 28 mm (for 19 mm internal).

The elliptical shape of the patented aero spokes also offers lower drag and saves 4 Watts at 40 km/h according to the brand, which is equivalent to 7 seconds over 40 km.

Infinity Hubs

With the new Infinity hubs, Mavic promises a stiffer axle, durable bearings, non-contact spoke lacing (to avoid squeaks or creaks) and a lightweight and quick-engaging freehub body.

The spoke placement is optimized and allows for optimal tension balance for efficient power transfer. It should also be noted that the spokes are of the same length for the front and rear wheels.

In addition to reduced maintenance and tool-free ease of service, this new double-ratchet freehub body also features a removable ring that offers a loud or silent click depending on user preference.

For which tire width?

Mavic recommends mounting the new Cosmic SLR 45 Disc with 25 mm Tubeless tires for better aerodynamics and reduced weight, 28 mm for more comfort and traction, or
32 mm for superior comfort on degraded roads. The maximum recommended tire size according to the ETRTO standard is 52 mm for these wheels.
