The 2021 Giant TCR Range: Gains, Details, Prices and Weights

Discover the details of the 2021 range of the new Giant TCR. Ten models are available, built around three versions TCR Advanced SL, TCR Advanced Pro and TCR Advanced, priced from €1,800 to €10,200, offered with disc or rim brakes. The new TCR is meant to be more aerodynamic and to offer an even better stiffness-to-weight ratio, for performance that is more appealing than ever.

Unveiled in broad strokes a few weeks ago, the ninth generation of the Giant TCR is revealing a bit more of itself as the season goes on. Developed by Giant engineers working alongside development managers, aerodynamicists and some of the best professional riders, such as Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet, the new Giant TCR Advanced SL is meant to be even faster than its predecessor. It benefits from meticulous work, from material choices and industrial processes right through to the paint itself, to produce a lighter and even more capable machine.

Outstanding Performance

The new Giant TCR Advanced SL succeeds in improving its aerodynamics while gaining lightness and stiffness. To do so, Giant has deployed cutting-edge new technologies, some of them still unprecedented in the cycling industry.

Optimized Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics was the last hurdle to clear for the TCR. Obviously weight and mechanical qualities are essential when designing a frame at this level, but reducing aerodynamic drag was the big challenge for Giant’s teams. This is therefore a very significant evolution over the previous generation. Giant’s engineers combined calculations and wind-tunnel testing to design the new TCR, knowing that only the seconds saved on the clock could validate the changes.

Truncated Elliptical Tubes

The new TCR adopts profiled tubes in a truncated-ellipse shape, which considerably reduce aerodynamic drag, regardless of the angle of attack of the airflow. All of the frame tubes, the fork and the handlebar area were worked on using this same principle in the GST wind tunnel in Immenstaad, Germany.

Greater Integration

While designing this TCR, Giant applied the lessons learned from developing the Propel Advanced SL regarding the integration of disc brakes: they reduce aerodynamic drag compared to a standard rim-brake caliper. Since the brake caliper is not placed above the wheel, it increases tire clearance. Thanks in particular to a new symmetrical fork, the new TCR lets airflow pass freely toward the down tube. Giant has also created a new Contact SLR aero handlebar with internal cable routing, offering aerodynamics, ergonomics and easier maintenance.

Integrated Disc Brakes

The new frame has been optimized to fit the latest flat-mount disc brake standard for effective braking in all conditions. The 12x100mm front and 12x142mm rear thru-axles provide stiffness and steering precision while also saving weight.

A New Fork

To improve steering precision, Giant’s engineers redesigned the fork from the steerer axis up, resulting in a fork 35% stiffer than the previous model. It is also more aerodynamic while remaining just as light. The larger wheel clearance now allows fitting tires up to 32mm wide.

New Cockpit Components

With performance and aerodynamics in mind, the new TCR also introduces new dedicated components. The cockpit changes completely with a new stem and a new aero handlebar, both even lighter than the previous generation. The new TCR Advanced SL also comes with 2 new ISP seat clamps for optimal fine-tuning of the pedaling position.

New Contact SLR / Contact SL Stems

Available in carbon (SLR) and aluminum (SL), the new Contact stem saves up to 15 g compared to the current version. Its new design also offers an aerodynamic advantage and better integration.

New Computer Mount

Supplied with the Advanced SL and Advanced Pro versions, the new computer mount integrates onto the top of the new Contact SLR / SL stems. This adjustable, lightweight mount is compatible with Giant, Garmin and Wahoo GPS units as well as GoPro cameras, and offers an optimal computer position for better screen readability.

New Contact SLR / Contact SL Handlebars

The new Contact SLR (carbon) and Contact SL (aluminum) handlebars feature a more aerodynamic and more ergonomic profile than the previous version. Cable routing through the handlebar has also been revised for easier maintenance.

New ISP Seat Clamps

The TCR Advanced SL comes with two new ISP seat clamps. This allows an optimal riding-position fit according to each rider’s build and preferences.
