Bike and cheese: discover two gourmet routes labeled in the Doubs

On the occasion of the Paris International Agricultural Show, the Doubs department received the “Vélo et fromages” (Bikes and Cheeses) label for the second time. Two gourmet itineraries, 300 and 70 kilometers long, are now available for cycling to discover the region’s heritage and culinary riches. Will you choose the “Coulée Gourmande” (Gourmet Flow) or the “Montagne de Fromages” (Mountain of Cheeses)? A way to satisfy both your legs and your taste buds!

Combining tourism, agriculture, and sport, the “Vélo & Fromages” label was awarded to the Doubs Department for a second time as part of a new national call for projects labeling cycling routes around French cheese heritage.

A second 300-kilometer circuit is therefore being launched this year. The second route combines a section of EuroVelo 6, which runs along the Doubs valley from Besançon to Montbéliard, and the GTJ cyclo, connecting the Cité des Princes to Chapelle-des-Bois via the ridges of the Jura Mountains. The itinerary includes about fifty cheese sites and twenty establishments labeled “Made in chez Nous, les entreprises du Doubs se visitent” (Made in our home, Doubs businesses can be visited). Its creation once again highlights the beauty of the Doubs landscapes and the quality of its expertise.

This new gourmet itinerary continues to promote “slow tourism” in the department. Cycling and local product enthusiasts can discover processing workshops (called “fruitières”), aging cellars, and cheese dairies. Along the way, cyclists can also discover absinthe distilleries, an artisan chocolatier, bronze bell foundries, an artisan wild boar specialist, a shipyard, watchmaking factories, as well as many typical Jura Mountains crafts. Not to mention a wide variety of quality accommodations and a selection of essential tourist sites.

The label was awarded by the Assembly of French Departments, the National Interprofessional Center for the Dairy Economy (CNIEL), Tourisme & Territoires, and Vélo & Territoires. The first labeled route, in 2019, extends over 70 km in the heart of the Frasne plateau and the Drugeon valley in the Haut-Doubs and includes about ten cheese sites.
