Created in 2009, Strava is experiencing unprecedented growth that has led the platform to pass two major milestones this February, as 3 billion activities have been recorded by the 50 million users that the platform now counts. Currently, the Strava platform welcomes over 1 million new members every month. As the community continues to grow, the frequency of activity sharing on Strava now reaches 19 million monthly uploads in 2019 (see 2019 Year In Sports report). Strava is also witnessing the evolution of sports practices. For example, since the community surpassed 2 billion activities at the end of 2018, the platform has recorded an average monthly growth of 59% in the number of activities shared by women, 46% in running activities, and 41% in activities added outside the United States.
“We built Strava to connect athletes and, through our technology, give them the feeling of being part of a team,” explains Michael Horvath, CEO and co-founder of Strava. “I thank the millions of athletes around the world who have joined the Strava community and have now recorded over 3 billion running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and other activities. Not a day goes by that our staff isn’t focused on the needs of athletes, always looking for future innovative experiences that will connect them to what motivates them and drives their athletic lives.” In May 2017, eight years after its creation, Strava celebrated its first billion activities. The second billion was reached just 18 months later (in December 2018), and it took only 13 months to pass the 3 billion mark, in early February 2020. Among all these recorded activities, cycling and running are the most popular sports, but Strava adapts to more than 30 different sports.
Segments, one of Strava’s most popular features, are portions of road or trail created by members. Athletes can then compare their performances and aim for a place in the segment’s dedicated leaderboard. Since the platform’s creation, Strava athletes have created nearly 20 million segments, including 3 million created since December 2018. Furthermore, approximately 25,000 new segments are created every month.
