Driven by the success of its apparel among professional athletes in their quest for equipment to combat the elements, Castelli has for many years been at the top of the hierarchy of cycling equipment manufacturers in the fight against rain and cold. The famous Gabba, highlighted by pro peloton riders during Milan – San Remo and Giro stages ridden in icy and wet road conditions, is its finest achievement. The desire to replace the suffocating “parachute-style” rain jacket, in which one ended up wet inside and out, to offer more effective and high-performance cold and moisture protection, emerged in 2009 alongside the Cervélo team. The high quality and technicality of the products, and their widespread use by the professional showcase on television (especially by riders from teams with whom the Italian firm is not a partner) then largely validated the work carried out by the Castelli teams.

Perfetto RoS convertible, the essential
Inspired by the fourth-generation Gabba RoS, Castelli has developed the Perfetto RoS jacket, presented here in its convertible version with removable zippered sleeves. Let’s not beat around the bush: the Perfetto RoS is a “must-have” as the British riders of Team Ineos, Castelli’s technical partner, would say – meaning an essential piece of equipment for all cyclists and triathletes who train diligently. Simply because its design, the fabrics it incorporates to combat cold and humidity, and the convertible option that allows the zippered sleeves to be removed, guarantee great versatility of use, meeting the needs for “3/4” of a season.

The result of a collaboration with the highly effective protection specialist Gore, the Perfetto RoS convertible jacket is designed with an exclusive Castelli Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper 205 warm fabric, waterproof, warm and brushed on the front, and with a Castelli Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper 203 stretch fabric on the back for greater elasticity and breathability. The back also features a longer tail and a wide reflective band.

The Perfetto RoS features a host of well-thought-out technical details that place it in the very high-end category. The jacket thus has waterproof seams at the shoulders to reinforce its protection against humidity. And it benefits from a “Rain or Shine” treatment, Castelli’s technology to enhance its water resistance. However, this is not a completely waterproof rain jacket (like Castelli’s Idro 2 Jacket and Idro Pro 2 Jacket), but rather a formidable barrier and a valuable ally for riding in very wet and cool conditions.

It is always difficult to estimate the resistance time based on rain density, spray, and wind strength, but know that it perfectly withstands constant drizzle, even sustained rain, and perfectly maintains its windproof effect. The recommended operating temperature is 4 to 16°C (a bit chilly, we stopped at 6°C, preferring to opt for an Alpha RoS when the thermometer dropped below. But a more robust body will have no difficulty tolerating it).

For those who are not accustomed to the Italian manufacturer’s cuts or have never worn a Perfetto, be aware that the Perfetto RoS runs small in the sense that it is worn very close to the body, with an ideally designed high collar and a very “fitted” cut all the way to the ends of the sleeves, which is very appreciable as it considerably limits air and water entry (unlike looser garments, which may sometimes seem more “comfortable” and in which some feel less constricted at first, but which are actually significantly less effective and performing against the elements). To give you an idea, the forearms from the elbow crease feel really close to the skin, leaving space only for a potential long-sleeved base layer so as not to feel too tight and restricted. This is in any case the principle of this type of product, which is used alone or with a short-sleeved or long-sleeved base layer, with the aim of considerably limiting bulk and ensuring ideal efficiency and performance in action.

The jacket also features a YKK® Vislon® zipper, which is reliable and easy to open/close, and covered to further enhance wind and rain protection.

The multi-season solution
One of the other great assets of this Perfetto RoS convertible jacket lies in its two cleverly and discreetly placed zippers just above the elbow bend. They allow you to switch from a long-sleeved jacket, which you can wear in temperatures below 10°C, to a warm short-sleeved “jersey” when the thermometer starts to rise to around 15°C.

The Perfetto RoS jacket thus transforms into a Gabba in a few seconds. The two removable forearms are easy to remove, even while riding, and can be easily slipped into a back pocket, which is very practical for “in-between” rides where heat and/or humidity conditions might change. Here too, we note the attention to detail with a hem that folds over the flexible band, allowing the short-sleeved version of the jacket to maintain its fitted cut and effectiveness.

The diversity of garment configuration possibilities also helps to attract the user: start with short sleeves, the Perfetto RoS forearms in a pocket. Start with long sleeves to air out and lighten up during the ride, and even opt, depending on the weather, for a pair of more classic arm warmers to replace the Perfetto RoS forearms. The Perfetto RoS convertible offers a wealth of choices here! It also features two welcome zippered openings on the sides to increase the product’s breathability and the body’s heat regulation as desired, depending on the different conditions and phases of action on the bike.

Technicality and versatility: our most precious ally!
Apart from the presence of only two back pockets, which for us is the only drawback of this product and too limiting for carrying spares and refreshments (in which case you can always opt for a cut water bottle or a saddle bag), this Perfetto RoS convertible jacket is almost flawless. It provides a perfect solution, offering a clever blend of protection and breathability, and will support you on most rides throughout the year before or after summer. We always appreciate Castelli’s usual fitted cut and meticulous finish quality, and we fully benefit from the product’s great technicality, designed and articulated to ensure full efficiency on the bike.
The Perfetto RoS convertible provides a perfect solution, offering a clever blend of protection and breathability, and will support you on most rides throughout the year before or after summer.
For a cyclist who experienced the thickness of multiple layers to pile on in the 90s and bulky, ineffective thermal jackets, this is the best cycling jacket we have ever worn. We were already impressed by the traditional Perfetto RoS model, but this convertible version also offers brilliant versatility. Available in five colors (fluorescent yellow – orange – blue – steel blue – black), its price of €239.95 does not appear to be a deterrent given the levels of performance and effectiveness observed. If you ride a minimum and are looking for a valuable ally, don’t hesitate, go for it!
