Mathieu van der Poel’s cyclocross bike

Among the very best in the world on road and MTB, Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel is also, and above all, the reigning cyclo-cross world champion. A few days before his first races of the season in the discipline, we focus on his rainbow-striped Canyon Inflite CF SLX bike.

Displayed at the Shimano stand at the Roc d’Azur show, we were able to discover in detail Mathieu van der Poel‘s bike, or rather one of his bikes, as a cyclo-cross rider has at least three machines for each event. All identical, of course, which is not necessarily the case for the wheels, as several pairs are prepared to cope with different types of situations and terrains, with different tubular setups.

Mathieu van der Poel’s bike is equipped with handmade Dugast tubulars, 33 mm tire width, here with lightly marked treads, which provides good rolling qualities on dry terrain.

The bike used by Mathieu van der Poel – the reigning world champion –  and his Corendon – Circus team in cyclo-cross is a Canyon Inflite CF SLX, the brand’s specific model designed from the highest-end carbon fiber, found on the Aeroad and Ultimate for road, the Speedmax for triathlon, the Endurace for sportives, or the Grail for gravel. Compared to this latter model, the Inflite stands out with geometry details, even if some brands choose to use identical frames for both types of riding.

The main triangle of the Inflite CF SLX features a “drop” that provides more comfortable support when the rider carries the bike on their shoulder. It differs from a gravel bike with a more compact geometry, for livelier reactions during changes of direction.

After a few weeks of rest just after the Road World Championships in Yorkshire, Mathieu van der Poel is expected to resume cyclo-cross competition in the last week of October, with the European Championships in early November in his sights.

Mathieu van der Poel maintains settings close to his road bike, with a Canyon H11 Ergocockpit monocoque handlebar and no spacer stack on the head tube.

The “diamond point” treads on the rolling surface offer good rolling qualities, while the more pronounced chevrons on the sides, combined with low inflation pressure, ensure good grip on soft ground. Note that the fork can accommodate larger tire widths.

The world champion rides with a specific chainring combination, not available commercially, with 46 and 39 teeth.

At the rear, Mathieu van der Poel rides with a “classic” 11-28 cassette. His minimum gear ratio is therefore 39/28, which seems quite high. But cyclo-cross riders prefer to run alongside the bike when the speed is lower than what is required with this gearing.

Despite his tall stature (1.84 m), Mathieu van der Poel rides with crank arms of “only” 172.5 mm. They allow him to pedal through certain off-cambers.

Two 140 mm rotors are sufficient for cyclo-cross, even for a 75 kg athlete like the world champion. This is because speeds reached in competition are never very high.

The Dutchman uses the famous Shimano XTR x-country MTB pedals, with SPhyre XC9 shoes.
Dura-Ace Di2 derailleurs have proven their effectiveness even in the worst conditions.

The Dura-Ace Di2 rear derailleur cage, with a capacity of up to 30 teeth, is compatible for both road and cyclo-cross.
The world champion has a personalized Selle Italia SLR saddle.

For fast and rolling courses, Mathieu van der Poel chooses Shimano Dura-Ace C60 tubular wheels, for their aerodynamics and stiffness.

The world champion has at least 12 wheels available per race. Here are numbers 11 and 12.
