Review of the Vision Metron Disc Wheels and 3 Sticks

Since its founding in the 1990s in Hawaii—home to the world’s most famous triathlon—Vision has earned a reputation for excellence in the field of aerodynamics. Both in training and in races, we’ve been testing a winning wheelset in this category for several months: the Metron Disc and the 3-spoke Metron—a dynamic combination. By 3bikes.fr/DR

What sets the Metron Disc apart is its traditional spoked design. It’s essentially a classic wheel (with an 80-mm rim), except that a flange has been added to improve aerodynamics and transform it into a lenticular wheel. That’s interesting from a dynamic standpoint, but also for aerodynamics, since the wheel is curved (lenticular) and conforms to the shape of the frame. It’s also a plus in terms of maintenance, since if it breaks, you simply replace the flange.

In the event of a break, simply replace the flange.

On the road, the slight “log-like” effect—sometimes created by certain one-piece wheels—disappears. The result is a smoother, more responsive wheel that adapts to all terrains.

A pair costs nearly 3,000 euros. We tested the Metron Disc both in training and in races, on hilly, slightly windy roads with varied surfaces. We didn’t encounter any particular difficulties related to using this type of equipment. The aerodynamic and inertia benefits are definitely there; once you exceed 40 km/h, the gain is immediately noticeable.

But when paired with the new (redesigned) Metron 3 Spokes on the front, it’s a completely different story. The latter, which is very stiff, stiffens the bike’s front end but, more importantly, creates significant crosswind drag.

The 3-spoke Metron is very stiff and makes the bike feel stiffer at the front.

If you’re not “built like a tank,” problems start to arise after 100 km. Accelerations become more laborious, and you have to adapt when facing strong crosswinds. Basically, you have to “fight” with the bike to keep it under control, and as the kilometers go by, that means lost watts for the rest of the ride. As for braking, the rim treatment on the three-spoke wheel is effective. Combined with the included brake pads, you feel safe even at high speeds, in both wet and dry conditions. This is also a plus when riding a time trial bike, where, on some models, the braking system can sometimes be tricky.

At just over €2,768 for the set (€1,528 for the Disc), the Vision wheels sit in the high-end segment but remain affordable compared to some competing models. With a beautiful finish and high-quality bearings, they’re hard to resist—especially since they also come with a very practical wheel bag and the appropriate brake pads.
