What a finish! This 6th German stage delivered immense tension in the last kilometer of the run, which saw Australian Jacob Birtwhistle win ahead of Vincent Luis. The Frenchman can take solace in reclaiming the lead in the world rankings.
Previously, the Australian had already exited T1 in the lead after a grouped swim. For the French team, Dorian Coninx was in 3rd position, Vincent Luis 7th, Léo Bergère 15th, and Pierre Le Corre 29th.
Four Frenchmen were in the lead group on the bike, then eventually three after Dorian Coninx's crash.
At T2, German Jonas Schomburg was the first to start running, but he was quickly forced to fall back. Vincent Luis took the lead less than 4 km in, just before a group of six broke away definitively. This group included Spaniard Mario Mola, Vincent Luis, Léo Bergère, New Zealander Eden Wilde, the formidable Jacob Birtwhistle, and Belgian Jelle Geens, the winner of the last stage in Montreal.
These six men gradually accelerated the already very high pace under the red flag before Vincent Luis launched the final sprint 300 m from the line. Only Jacob Birtwhistle was able to follow him. The two men engaged in an incredible, neck-and-neck duel, gritting their teeth in the last 150 m. Vincent Luis was in front for a long time but was ultimately overtaken by the Australian in the final meters.
Léo Bergère took a magnificent 5th place. Pierre Le Corre finished 21st and Dorian Coninx 25th.
Tomorrow at 9:30 AM, the Mixed Relay World Championship will take place. The composition of the French team will be announced in a few minutes.
