That’s it, the French Ironman circuit inaugurated its new event this morning with the Ironman 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne in Vendée. And for this first edition, Frederik Van Lierde, licensed with Sables Vendée Triathlon, won on “home soil” and thus continues his harvest of victories in French events.
The Belgian, winner of the Ironman Lanzarote last May, is thus preparing in the best possible way for Ironman France Nice, which will take place in two weeks, where he has already won five times, a record for the event.
Ironman World Champion in 2013, Frederik Van Lierde exited the water in 6th position, then took the lead on the bike at km 15. He reached T2 in the lead ahead of the 2018 French Long Distance Champion, Sébastien Fraysse, and Arthur Horseau, recent winner of the FrenchMan XXL in Hourtin, Gironde.
The Belgian, an excellent runner, was neither caught nor even threatened during the half-marathon. He won in 3h56’46. Fourth at T2, Denis Chevrot took 2nd place on the podium in 3h58’57 and Arthur Horseau 3rd in 4h02’44. Russian Andrey Bryukhankov was 4th in 4h04’00 and Frenchman Arnaud Chivot completed the top 5 in 4h05’19.
