Today marked the 2nd round of the 2019 World Triathlon Series. After Abu Dhabi in early March, the world’s best short-distance triathletes met in Bermuda for the 1.5-40-10 format.
France’s Dorian Coninx caused a sensation by winning his very first WTS event, beating five-time Spanish world champion and circuit returnee Javier Gomez. In a three-way battle with Norway’s Gustav Iden, Coninx managed to accelerate in the last 300 meters to claim a magnificent victory.
Javier Gomez took 2nd place, Gustav Iden 3rd, and Vincent Luis finished 4th, just off the podium. There were even four French athletes in the top 10, with Pierre Le Corre, the 2018 European champion, taking 6th place and Léo Bergère, Dorian Coninx’s training partner in Grenoble, 10th.
In the world rankings, after 2 rounds, Vincent Luis took the lead with 1,523 points. He is ahead of Spain’s Fernando Alarza, 1,392 points. Léo Bergère is 3rd with 1,287 points, ahead of three-time reigning world champion Mario Mola, 1,142 points. Today’s winner, Dorian Coninx, is 5th with 1,060 points.
