TRIATHLON – Heading to Thun for Ironman Switzerland 2020

After 23 years in Zurich, the country’s largest city, Ironman Switzerland will change venues in 2020 and head to Thun, in the canton of Bern. Ironman Switzerland is the second oldest Ironman in Europe after Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote and the oldest on the European continent.

Athletes will swim 3.8 km in the clear waters of Lake Thun. The single-loop clockwise course will take athletes to the marina where the transition will take place.

The two-loop bike course will go to Spiez where athletes will ride in the magnificent Gürbe Valley. The course will lead to Bern Airport, from the right side of the valley to the opposite side, where they will do a loop in the Gantrisch region. From there, the course will be relatively flat and downhill to the transition area where athletes will start the second loop.

After 180 kilometers on the bike, competitors will begin the marathon in the old town, in front of Schadau Castle and along the Aare River to reach the other bank and the trails of the Thun City Run. After a U-turn, runners will return to the race site for the finish.
