Fi’zi:k Tempo Powerstrap R5 Review

At the entry level of the Italian brand’s range, the Powerstrap is a variation of its big sister, the R5, without the Boa closure. At less than 120 euros, what are the advantages of this model that has all the makings of a great shoe?

With the R4, R3, and R1 positioned above it, it’s hard to find its place in the Italian brand’s catalog. Especially since Fi’zi:k tends to level its products upwards in this segment. This variation of the R5 (149 euros with the Boa closure system) nevertheless has many advantages, starting with an atypical look featuring two close-set Velcro straps.

This strap system is ideally placed to create clamping force. Thus, the Velcro straps perfectly wrap the foot, with an attachment point on the inside of the instep. The front strap is positioned in a crisscross pattern, starting from the big toe. The result is undeniable, and the closure is particularly effective.

The heel is reinforced and extends well above the Achilles tendon. Here again, riders with high arches and those who prefer good heel support will be delighted. A small extra detail further enhances the area, with small anti-slip nubs on the inside. In this case, the foot doesn’t move at all.

The front tongue is the only slightly “cheap” part of the product, but it fulfills its role under the Velcro straps. Moreover, the clearance on the instep enhances comfort at the front and allows for freedom of movement of the ankle during the upstroke phase of pedaling.

For an entry-level model, there is nothing to complain about in terms of finish. Also, while the pastel colors and materials used may seem intimidating at first glance, there’s no need to worry about maintenance. A quick wipe with a sponge after a ride in the rain, and it’s done.

On the road

For those who prefer strap closures, this model is ideal. Especially since the slight elasticity of the strap allows for a much more progressive closure than a classic Velcro strap. Be careful, however, with the clamping force. With a bad habit of ratchets and Boa dials, we tend to forget the tension to apply to this type of closure. During the first hour of riding, we were forced to gradually loosen the shoes. That’s how much support the R5s provide.

As usual with Fi’zi:k, comfort is paramount here. The last shape is truly very pleasant, and there are no annoying seams. The foot is correctly supported overall.

Be vigilant, however, about the differences with your old shoe model. The carbon sole (reinforced with nylon) is a little thicker than some 100% carbon models. You will therefore need to adjust your saddle height by a few millimeters (4 in our case). As for the sole itself, we are not dealing with the stiffest on the market. But is that the most important thing? The Powerstrap R5 is a model that prioritizes comfort and, therefore, its ability to take you far without constraint. All with a certain touch of elegance.
