Juliette Bénédicto (33) and the 24-year-old man accompanying her died on Thursday afternoon after falling a hundred meters in the Aravis massif, Haute-Savoie. The two ski tourers were on a cornice that gave way under their weight. The victims’ bodies were found this Friday morning by rescue teams.
Emotion is running high in the wider triathlon family. A jack-of-all-trades, Bénédicto was known for her high-level triathlon career, notably her Junior World Champion title in 2004 (she also had a national title in the Cadets category and two in the Juniors). Returning to the long-distance circuit in 2011, she won the Alpsman in 2018 (Annecy).
Based in the Cluses region, the triathlete had also transitioned to trail running, with a victory at the mythical Saintélyon in 2016 and several participations in international races with the French trail running team.
Professionally, Juliette Bénédicto was a nutritionist-dietitian and a mother of two children.
